@BWWW95 @JayGallie @AnxiousHolly You mean this? The happy computer literally means Mac before it was called MacOS. The finder has the same face as a nostalgic throwback

@western_xi @JayGallie @AnxiousHolly That's what it is. The original Macintosh icon wasn't this version of it, and this symbol has only been associated with the Finder for like 25 years at this point.

Signal@signalapp

We are very happy that today Apple issued a patch and a security advisory. This comes following @404mediaco reporting that the FBI accessed Signal message notification content via iOS despite the app being deleted. Apple’s advisory confirmed that the bugs that allowed this to happen have been fixed in the latest iOS release. You can read more here: support.apple.com/en-us/127002 Note that no action is needed for this fix to protect Signal users on iOS. Once you install the patch, all inadvertently-preserved notifications will be deleted and no forthcoming notifications will be preserved for deleted applications. We’re grateful to Apple for the quick action here, and for understanding and acting on the stakes of this kind of issue. It takes an ecosystem to preserve the fundamental human right to private communication.

Love Craig Federighi but wouldn’t be sad if he didn’t make it through the executive transition. On one hand, I think he’s taken too much direct blame regarding Apple Intelligence. On the other hand, I think there are a lot of other platform problems that are squarely his fault.

When I say Apple’s software is bad, I’m never comparing it to other companies’ software; I’m comparing it to previous versions of their own. iOS (and macOS, although I can’t really speak for it since I’m new to it, but I’m positive the premise still applies) today isn’t anywhere near as good as I remember it being when I got my first iPhone (iOS 12), and mind you, I absolutely hated iPhones & iOS to core at the time, but once I used them for the first time, it was mind-blowing compared to what I had before that dwindled instantly with iOS 13 and I still remember how many of my friends at the time would complain about how bad it was. The inherent nature of change with time—internal and external factors, a far larger and more complex code base, us getting used to it so its looses that *Wow* factor, are all things a company like Apple can and should be able to handle. But Craig’s just sitting on his ass, not progressing with any of it, while so many of his users are frustrated daily with the stuff he’s in charge of. He can be charming and funny on stage, but to me, it just discredits him even more—how unbothered he is. The keyboard has been broken for years, text selection is hair-pulling, the lock screen as a whole is the most low-effort, shitty UX I’ve ever seen in their history, it’s all been a stutter fest since iOS 13, and that’s just the worst of it, of which everyone is affected and many have been complaining about for years, while nothing has been done about any of it. And the list goes on. But no, we all needed resource-heavy, fancy, incomplete shaders in our lives. A move they wouldn’t have had to pull had Apple Intelligence not been a failure—a situation of which, btw, is truly telling. Revealed so much. And while I don’t hate Liquid Glass, it was still a concept, it was still an experiment, it wasn’t ready. They continue to hold their software to past standards they simply aren’t living up to, they either need to accept that or lock tf in and sort their shit. If we’re being real, they’ve never been a software company to begin with, they just had a few brief flurries of success (iOS 12 & 15, as of *my* user lifetime) where they did things right. Most of what’s carrying them today is the fact they’re the only company at this scale to hold control over both hardware and software so they can do things others can’t, hence you can never really compare them to others, but that can only take you so far if you keep letting pillars of the foundation crack while continuing to build on top of it. Their hardware is advancing far faster than their software and it’s pretty much the #1 thing thats actively tarnishing their reputation daily. They have it significantly easier than any other company, I see no excuses really. Feel free to bite me on any of this. I’m curious as to how you see it.

I still seriously hate this new battery chart in iOS and iPadOS. It's ridiculously USELESS now. Up until iOS18 you could just tap on each single hour and see exactly what might have caused some unusual battery drain. And now I'm sitting here with my iPad mini losing 20% in just 6h of standby and I have no fucking idea because it no longer lets me see what app used battery from 3-4am for example. Only the TOTAL use of the entire day...
