Recently in Munich and saw a sport I had no idea existed: river surfing. The site is called Eisbachwelle, the world’s largest and most consistent city centre location for the activity. Surfers (def not for amateurs) line up on the river bank and take turns. How? The wave was originally natural and only formed when enough gravel piled up in the riverbed and blocked the river’s current. This build-up was infrequent and unpredictable, though. So, in the 1980s, someone installed a railway sleeper, which helped to produce a more consistent wave (and surfers can also bring mobile ramps to do the same).
