If you think that a scholarly focus on inequality in an era of historically extreme inequality is an "abdication of scholarly duty," you might just be an apologist for ruling elites
Steve McGuire@sfmcguire79

“Sociology’s relentless focus on race, gender and class, its emphasis on the need for social change over the benefits of social stability and its obsession with inequality amount to an abdication of scholarly duty.”

What really fucking boils my piss is that we had the opportunity to change the world after Covid. The pandemic produced a fascinating real-world experiment. It demonstrated that human activity can alter emissions and local environmental conditions extraordinarily quickly

@BenLiddicott @humantransit Trams are better: less pollution, longer and fit more people, 100% dedicated lanes, something a bus network will never have.

I’m convinced this is the only reason people like trams. The high cost of laying the tracks means that trams essentially only serve the Express bus routes, so they are quick. But buses take the long way round for the reasons you explained, and so they are slow. Also, if you park on a tram line, you get towed instantly, but that doesn’t happen with bus lanes Technologically, buses are strictly better. They’re trams on rubber wheels which can use any road! That’s clearly better! But it just doesn’t work out better in practice for the social and political reasons you explain.

As a transit planner I deal with intergenerational conflict constantly. Seniors want the bus to come to their door, but they have time to wait so they don’t mind if it’s infrequent. Their working age kids and grandkids reward the opposite, a longer walk to frequent service. 1/

man i think a central part of aging gracefully is to really understand that the young will inherit the earth and at a certain point your task is to allow them to do so.

🐶🇺🇦 Our Ukrainian soldier found a dog, expecting a fierce guardian, but instead found the kindest creature, one that simply smiles sincerely instead of saying "woof." They defend our land because they have more love within them than the enemy could ever dream of.

We lost homes, families, and entire cities. We slept in basements, buried our children, and carried on. Now Russians are crying over burning warehouses asking “why us?”. I have yet to see one Russian cry for what their country has done to Ukraine.

Here is what this “uncomfortable” project will look like: - 790 new housing units (86 affordable) - 132 two-bedroom units - 85 three-bedroom units (!!!) - 50% larger Safeway on ground floor These old folks clearly just hate young families and see them as a virus in their city.
Laura Waxmann@laura_waxee

Hundreds of #SanFrancisco Marina residents turned out this evening for townhall on controversial @Safeway housing plan, which would place what for many is an uncomfortably tall, 22 & 18 story project at the low-slung neighborhood’s waterfront. @sfchronicle

Trump has directed his administration to withhold critical aid to states that didn’t vote for him. Trump genuinely just hates Americans. He openly hates everyone who isn’t a sycophant. He is the most anti-American president in my lifetime.

WAIT! Canada built and funded this bridge with $0 in US money. Trump threatened to block it unless the US got half the profits. Canada agreed July 10, and he called it "a MUCH BETTER DEAL." 4 days later, he slapped a 50% tariff on Canada anyway, and THAT'S why they skipped the ceremony. This dolt has isolated the US from some of our best allies for no reason other than weakening our own nation to our adversaries' benefit, like Putin's. He is making the U.S. signature on the agreements worthless.

Imagine being proud of using your economic strength to break long standing agreements and essentially steal the hard work and money of Canadians who actually built the bridge. This is gross. Anyone who voted for this should be ashamed of themselves. You voted for the school bully.

@arpitrage @paulnovosad Most entrepreneurs don’t grind if by grinding you need to make sure you have a third meal in your day. This is what welfare addresses, not entrepreneur hardship which almost never involves starvation or homelessness. France suffers from lack of startup capital. Unrelated to grind

@paulnovosad It's a bit of a tradeoff: welfare compression and welfare states reduces the need to grind, but grinding is how you get entrepreneurs!

So much grief is caused by structuring society around high-stakes bottlenecks—exams in South Korea and India, elite school admissions in the United States. This is a social choice. It doesn't exist in Canada/Germany/Aus, where top colleges are widely accessible and you distinguish yourself by what you do in/after college, not before.

We know from our intelligence and our partners that the Russians have readied missiles for a new massive attack on Ukraine. The strike may take place today – we have preliminary information that it could happen within the next 48 hours. Please take care of yourselves and pay attention to air raid alerts. We do expect understanding from our partners – air defense is the first priority where partners can help us. And it is important that more and more is becoming known in our key partner countries about what is really happening in Ukraine, about Russia’s attacks against our people, and about Russia’s efforts to prolong this war. Laura Loomer is in Ukraine these days. She is very close to President Trump. We spoke, and Laura saw a lot in Ukraine, in the capital and beyond – the Lavra, our people, and everything we are going through. I hope that America will continue to stand with Ukraine and that we will be able to end this war with a dignified peace. This is what we need. We are preparing for a meeting with the President of the United States and his team. I thank America. I thank everyone who stands with Ukraine – with our people and our efforts to protect life.

People asked me why I am not happy Loomer has come around. Because I don't believe people change internally because their government has asked them to. Clearly, the US wants a technology exchange, or Israel does, that is soon to be one in the same when it comes to military tech merging. So Loomer didn't have this omfg I saw the Epstein files and fuck those guys I hate you all. No, she got new marching orders. She is the same person. If you watch Tim Poole and these other Ukraine Haters,, they are changing their tune based on orders, not based on personal development. I don't care if they decide Ukraine is the best place on Earth. The fact remains they did 4 years of international damage and pro russia rhetoric. I get people want to believe that means they have changed. No, it means they still want to be paid, so they accept the new script.

February: Trump buys $1–5 million in Dell stock. May: “Go out and buy a Dell!” Then: Pentagon signs a $9.7 BILLION deal with Dell. July: “Go out and buy a Dell!” (again) The President bought millions in Dell stock, then stood at a White House podium, twice, telling Americans to go buy Dell computers. Dell stock is up 235% this year. In a functioning democracy that’s called securities fraud. Here it’s called Monday.
