Historian here. I’m seeing a lot of crazy takes about the US and WWII. Nazi Germany declared war on the United States on December 11, 1941. This came just days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The US then declared war on Japan. Germany, as Japan’s ally (via the Tripartite Pact), chose to escalate and declare war on the U.S. But Adolf Hitler already saw the U.S. as an enemy and believed war was inevitable. So this whole narrative by some Americans to the Europeans of “help us now in Iran because we helped you in WWII” doesn’t quite stack up to the realities of history

We are asking Europe to do something to ensure the oil they need can transit the Staight of Hormuz. That oil doesn't come to the US, it goes to Europe, China and India. We are self sufficient and just a simple EO by Trump can cap our prices and ensure our oil stays in country. Your EU leader just said that the "war" in Iran isn't Europe's war. Well, WWI, WWII, Bosnia and UKraine are America's war. We have no need to stay in NATO. We can align with those countries in Europe that are friendly to us on a case by case basis. We will save billions of taxpayers dollars getting out of NATO, and most NATo countries have been freeloaders for decades. Donald Trump has: - threatened Canada (a NATO member) with invasion - threatened to occupy Greenland (part of Denmark, a NATO member) - announced several times that he wants to leave NATO - refused to support Ukraine, even though the United States gave security assurances to Ukraine in the Budapester Memorandum of 1994 - actively finances Putin‘s war against Ukraine by easing sanctions against Russia - denied that soldiers from European countries have ever supported the United States and thereby - spitting on the legacy of fallen European soldiers who supported U.S. operations - imposed witless tariffs on its allies - insulted the leaders of allied countries over the past months And now he wonders why not everyone comes running when he calls. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz is a mess for the whole world. But Donald Trump himself is responsible for this geopolitical chaos.

@MacLeodLisa There are 3 byelections on right now. If you have a real message take it to the voters in those areas and try win other seats. Nobody likes floor crossings but its often driven by messaging one side or the other. What you really highlight is Carneys message being more persuasive.

The floor crossing is excessive for a government that is less than a year old in a minority parliament. Serious commentators and analysts might want to turn their attention to the longer term implications of seizing a majority this way and what it does for trust in politicians.
