Okay, you all lied. Today I tried my fourth Aldi’s location. The smell hit me on the way in, rotten produce. Went to the cheeses, lots out of date. The bread was cold and apparently thawing. The one nasty cashier was still there but this one had four self checkout machines. I used one, tried to leave, nasty cashier snapped at me to scan my receipt because “people steal.” Bonus: bags were available for 14¢. I got one. It seems thin, it’ll probably rip on the way into my house. No more tries from me. My daughter declared it the worst store ever.

I'd love to run a bar like this: - I own it outright, no mortgage - No electricity - Icehouse and propane fridge - No employees, just me - I live on-site - Food is pickled eggs and popcorn - There's an "inn" upstairs: army cots (BYO sleeping bag or buy one from me for $50) - Fireplace and outdoor bonfire pit - Light comes from solar-powered Christmas lights - Cash only, ATM at nearby gas station I sell cans of Bud, Labatt, and Ballantine Ale. No light beer, no seltzers, no fruity shit. For liquor we have Old Grandad 100 Proof, Newfie "Screech," Ketel One, and Laphroaig. If we have wine it's only Malbec or Argentinian Cab Franc. Would take requests if patrons are genuine regulars. There are no TV's, but there is Fooseball and a pool table. There's a solar-powered internet radio that only offers stations from rural Quebec, rural Chihuahua, or Indian Rez radio stations that play old country. Beer is $2/can for Labatt and Bud, $3 for Ballantine. $4 for liquor, no mixers. $1 pickled eggs, $2 popcorn. No coasters or napkins. A night at the "inn" is $15. Six free beers to the man who cleans out the composting toilet system. Three free beers to the man who bucks and splits a face-cord of firewood. The bar is not a "bar," it's a private residence that hosts a "club." Lifetime membership is $1, and you've gotta sign a waiver. I genuinely wonder if such a thing could work. The overhead would be practically nothing. You'd have what, property taxes, propane for the fridge, firewood, and of course the consumables. Might really be an interesting life. Helluva retirement plan; if nothing else even if you broke even you'd stay social well into your years.

Because we don’t move North and tell you how awful you are. Let me tell you honestly what we face from Northerners -drive up our home costs -rush around always pushing, always busy -have no manners, do not say ma’am and sir -tell us our religions are wrong -take down our monuments -tell us we can’t celebrate our history or ancestors -literally spit on our graves -teach our kids that they are inferior to Northern kids by birth -buy our old, well maintained homes, gut them and paint them gray And on and on and on. Any small Southern community who has had an influx of Northerners faces one of these issues almost daily. It’s not all Northerners of course but it’s enough to make a distinct impression.
Whitey Northcutt@WhiteyNorthcutt

Interesting how often you see the South talking about the North in one form or another & practically never see anyone from up here talking about them at all.

Lots of people are speculating about what the higher yields and upward inflation pressure means for real estate. The answer will come down to wage growth. In a true "inflationary" scenario, wage growth will take off alongside inflation, and there will be asset-level appreciation across real estate as a result. However, in a transitory inflation scenario, wage growth does not take off with inflation, and the higher yields and inflation spike eventually dissipate. And could even lead to deflation after the fact. Right now, wage growth is not showing any real signs of moving upward, which makes this look different than the 2021/22 inflation spike, as well as the one that occurred in the 1970s. My gut instinct is that the higher yields and inflation spike will hit a ceiling with wage growth and will come back down. Simply put, there isn't much "room" for consumers to absorb the higher costs.

Navy ships have hundreds of crew, so there’s usually a trained barber—or at least one guy who can run clippers without creating a war crime. Merchant ships have 25 people. So you get TERRIBLE haircuts. But I’ve never before seen one bad enough to trigger NATO Article 5.

one thing many anti-marriage men dont understand about marriage is that yes you are giving one woman vast power over your life. but you are also reducing to ~0 the amount of power that most non-kin women have over you with a good woman, this is an exceptional trade

Over half of all Americans attend some form of ‘higher education’ today, something that was once reserved for a small cohort of people. A large chunk of them don’t even get a degree - just the debt. Closing down 75% of universities will not result in any loss to mind or culture, will save people a lot of $$, and will force schools to fire administrators and focus on research and teaching - for students who actually belong there and want to be there. Pinching off these schools is a good thing.
Anthony Bradley@drantbradley

Clemson is $1.5B in debt. Syracuse is closing or pausing 93 programs, UNC-Chapel Hill plans to cut spending by $89M over 3 years. Duke recently let 600 employees go in a $350M budget cut. Indiana public colleges announced a plan to eliminate or merge 580 programs statewide.

Aldi sucks. You need a quarter for the cart. 👎 The cashier is sitting down. 👎 No bags. 👎 After shopping at Aldi, you need to go to a real grocery store to buy everything they don’t sell at Aldi. 👎 One positive: you don’t have to return the cart because the people that shop at Aldi will fight over a cart with a quarter in it.

Your CITY is NOT "walkable" until it is safe enough for an UNACCOMPANIED elementary schooler to take the shoelace express from city limits to downtown. If it's not walkable for an 8 year old child, it's not walkable at all. Is this standard too high for you? Too difficult?

It's very simple, travel has become woman-coded over the last decade or so because women have more money now and travel is safer, and once something becomes woman-coded men lose interest in it. Also men still travel a lot, but we're less likely to plaster it over an Instagram account or tell everyone they know about their amaze-balls trip to Iceland. Men will go on trips and come back with like 4 pictures (none with them in it) and never mention it to anyone outside of their immediate circle. Not to mention the Passport Bro stigma on any man who travels to the third-world
Rebecca V. Proud American 🇺🇸@AntiCommieBecca

I really do think this is a good example of male feminization. And it shows how it’s actually self-inflicted. Travel, adventure, and potential danger has always been male coded. Going hunting, going on quests used to be a right of passage for men. Are these men not doing that with their sons? “Sorry son, we can’t go anywhere, you see that’s consumerism” not only is this not something a man should say, but what right winger would ever utter those words?!🤦‍♀️ These men just want to stay inside the home play video games, masturbate & stay as far away from excitement as possible. This is becoming very problematic. How can they be “protectors“ if they’re too scared to leave the house. This is not normal!

If you are a young guy, you are shooting yourself in the foot if you always have headphones on. I see young guys walk into the gym and leave with them on, never talking to anyone. During the workout, I get it. And yes, we all have days where we need to lock in. But if you always need to isolate yourself to that point, you are probably missing out on one of the best parts of the gym.

Guy’s luxury SUV is getting towed at the airport drop-off zone He had the option to just pay the drop fee and get his car back. Instead, he jumps in, throws it in reverse while it’s still hooked up, rips the whole front end off as it slams to the ground, then starts blaming the tow driver Should’ve paid the drop fee, bro

Yesterday at 3pm ish we got 5 orders totalling $72,000. The fellas looked at each other and realized the day was just starting. Customers needed it asap. They were already 7 hours into their day, and ended up staying until 3:06am to finish the job. By the morning, our truck driver got in at 7:41am and delivered all the orders. I couldn’t think of another metals service center that could’ve got that done. Another win for manufacturers in America. To keep the machines moving, make more parts, and at a price that worked.

Private equity bought beloved Texas burger chain Whataburger in 2019. Customers have complained about a decline in burger/fry/drink quality and service since. PEs answer? Franchising and menu expansion. You see this pattern across business. “We aren’t growing? Let’s add a frappuccino machine!” — Makes me think of Domino’s and their turnaround last decade. They focused on fixing their pizza (it was bad) and ease of ordering (online/app). I have snobby friends that say “Dominos is good pizza” now. — It’s easy to dance around the core problems facing a business. And kid ourselves about what’s really wrong. It’s often that a business has lost sight of what made it successful in the first place.

There were snake issues, bug issues, water issues The tiny HOA they didn’t even realize existed threw a fit about chickens They sold the home in less than 3 years Homesteading looks glamorous on Instagram when rich women do it in pretty prairie dresses, but in reality it’s not sexy and it’s definitely not for everyone
