🌐The statement, "We do not know the Naga hostages," by Kuki Inpi Manipur(KIM) reflects the deeply polarized and complex security environment in Manipur
The Context:
The hostage crisis emerged in the wake of the killing of three church leaders in an ambush on May 13, 2026. Following this incident, dozens of civilians from both the Kuki and Naga communities were abducted by armed groups in the Kangpokpi and Senapati districts.
The Impasse: When Kuki organizations like the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) state that they "do not know" the whereabouts of the Naga hostages, they are navigating a situation where they claim their own community members have also been abducted and remain missing.
A "One-for-One" Dynamic: The narrative has been defined by a cycle of demands for reciprocal releases. For weeks, Naga apex bodies, such as the United Naga Council (UNC), refused to release Kuki detainees unless the Naga hostages were first accounted for.
The "Unknown" Status: By stating they do not have knowledge of the Naga hostages, Kuki organizations are distancing themselves from the actions of the specific armed groups or individuals who carried out those abductions. This serves as a strategic defensive posture in a volatile conflict where civil society organizations are under immense pressure to resolve the crisis while simultaneously managing intense communal grief and anger.
Not to mention, the 14 Kuki hostages have returned home safe and sound and their families welcomed them with tears of joy. Whereas, the families of the 6 Naga men are still wailing.
Demands:
1. The GOI and GOM plus CMs of Nagaland and Meghalaya must keep their promise of locating and handling of the 6 Naga hostages within the said stipulated timeframe (48HRS)
2. The perpetrators must be given capital punishment.
