True. I wrote a paper on all 14 words meaning ‘love’ for an undergrad Arabic class. The standout was al-Ishq (العشق), referring to the way a vine wraps around a tree, relying on it for survival.

i really like the idea that time is circular instead of linear and that what you want already exists on your timeline (vision, inspiration, etc). it's just another point on the same timeline, the same one that holds the memory of you as a toddler. it's not irrational, then that seeing these things for ourselves is just us becoming aware of what exists and giving it the name "future". the emphasis then shifts from forcing outcomes towards becoming the kind of person that unlocks said reality on the timeline sounds crazy and maybe we'll never know if this is how it works, but even believing it imho it removes a lot of limiting beliefs

Why are we medicating children for focus issues before asking about sleep, sugar intake, micronutrients, and screen exposure?

back in 2008, when i was 8, my dad got hired as a doctor and lung specialist to go with a community of a few thousand orthodox jewish cystic fibrosis patients, kids and young adults ages 6 to 28, on a trip to switzerland. for a lot of them, it was seen as maybe their last big trip abroad. my family and i were welcomed right away. we were the only non-orthodox family in the whole group, so we kind of stuck out, and people were super curious about us. i ended up meeting a ton of amazing people and forming real connections, even though i mostly clicked with the older patients. a few years later, i got the news that rivka, a 28yo patient i’d gotten close to who felt like an older sister to me, passed away. she was single and didn’t really have family. she had hobbies, but because of her illness she rarely had the time or energy to really invest in them. over the next decade, every couple of years i’d hear that another friend from that trip was gone. rivka and her friends were a big part of what kicked off this existential dread i still carry, the feeling that i need to do something that matters before my time comes too. i’m also super happy to be alive right now. cf has changed so much. kids born with cf today can expect a normal life. and knowing that people like rivka born today live normal lives, makes something in me grin a little :)
