His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdoğan President of the Republic of Türkiye Your Excellency Mr. President, I write to you with deep respect and urgency regarding the ongoing relationship between Somalia and Türkiye. The Somali people have not forgotten Türkiye’s support during our toughest times. Your leadership helped rebuild institutions, restore dignity, and strengthen Somalia’s national capacity. In particular, Türkiye’s role in training and supporting Somali security forces aimed to help protect the Somali state and its people. It was not meant to serve political interests or contribute to internal divisions. However, today, that trust is facing a serious challenge. In Southwest Somalia and among the diaspora, there is increasing worry that these same forces and resources may be seen as tools in internal political struggles. This perception is deeply troubling. Any misuse of training, equipment, or support originally intended for national defense could harm civilians and undermine the very reason Türkiye offered its help. Your Excellency, Somalia remains a fragile nation. The tragedy of Baidoa in 1992 left wounds that have not fully healed. Today, nearly 3 million people live in the Southwest region, including around 1 million internally displaced civilians. These vulnerable communities cannot withstand another cycle of violence. At this critical moment, even the appearance of external involvement in internal matters can deepen divisions and lead to significant humanitarian consequences. This is why careful and principled action is vital. The relationship between Somalia and Türkiye is more important than any individual or temporary political situation. It is built on trust, shared values, and a long-term vision for peace and stability. That trust must be safeguarded. The Somali people hold you in high regard and will always remember Türkiye’s support. But with that respect comes the expectation that Türkiye remains a neutral partner for peace and not a participant, directly or indirectly, in internal conflict. I respectfully urge that all actions be carefully considered to ensure they strengthen unity, protect civilians, and uphold the purpose of your support.
