The internet is built to give us what we want: validation, connection, thumbs-up, and animated hearts. But what are its hidden costs? In my new column with @Medium, "Buy Yourself," I explore how technology influences who we are and how we interact. medium.com/s/buy-yourself

It’s ~5:30pm in Italy so I ordered a decaf coffee and the shop owner just looked at me and said “no.” I can’t let you do that. You have to get caffeinated. Otherwise, you won’t have the fresh beans. A little embarrassing, but this is how the world should work.

@walterkirn The pilot told us we’d have a view of Yosemite Valley in two minutes. So cool. Why don’t more pilots go out of their way to say things like this? Also - Salesforce tower peeking out of the fog. As a golfer, I also love trying to identify courses from the air!

Once again I find that I'm among the five or six people on a packed plane who care to look out the window at views unavailable to humankind for almost all of our history on earth

Hollywood spends hundreds of millions of dollars on special effects, but my favorite movies need nothing fancy because the writing is just so damn good.

@MyGolfSpy If you can putt, putt. Master one short game shot early on - say, a basic chip shot with your sand wedge. Aim away from trouble.

I had a buddy call me over the weekend. He's just picking up golf and asked me for the best 3 pieces of advice for a beginner. Any of you have some wisdom to pass along? Much appreciated. 💬

@LouStagner @LouStagner what type of 10-foot putt is a 10-handicap most likely to make? Intuition says uphill and dead straight, but I feel like the answer is actually either flat or slightly down… and maybe with a tiny amount of break, so there’s something to read. What say you?!

Could a 10-index player win at Augusta if they were given a 10 foot birdie putt on every single hole? They get to select where their first putt starts from on each hole, it just needs to be from exactly 10 feet.

I’ll give away a pair of these @gfore’s today. Size 10. I’m drinking & golfing on a Friday least I can do is pay shipping and send someone a pair of sweet shoes. Guess correctly what I shoot at @AkChin_SoDunes today from 6,500 & you’re entered to win. I’ll pick randomly.

Nothing like the Honeymoon Phase of a swing tweak. Told myself I’m gonna swing everything 85% and I’m absolutely flushing it. Automatic. According to my models I’ve got about 12 more holes until we’re searching again. But until then, gotta treasure these little stretches.

@LouStagner paraphrasing what I would guess @nntaleb's reply to this would be - "a golfer averaging 200 yards off the tee will be ok playing a course that has a 6700+ yard option (and will play from ~6,000), but a golfer averaging 275+ will never be ok playing a course that doesn't."

The USGA says if you avg 275 with driver, you should play from 6700 yds or longer. Nearly half of regulation courses are 6700+. Less than 1% of golfers avg 275+. Almost half the courses in USA are long enough for the longest 1%, yet we need more long courses? Why?
