When my son was 11 months old, I took him to a park in Kettering, Ohio, where an unexpected density of socioeconomic factors were present. Two biracial pre-teens on the basketball court began hollering profanities at me and my little boy. “AYO WHYBO!” (≈ “Hey, White boy!”) I heard this a number of times, followed by rather loud racial slurs from the video below, intermixed with cackles from fellow demographic observers. Then this young individual, in a crackling voice, shouted, “SAY IT, WHYBO. I DARE YOU. SAY IT. THEN IMMA CLAP YO AZZ. SAY IT.” Multiple profanities appeared between these sentences, I should add. It was evident to me and to other playground observers what specific word he wanted me to say, as he repeated it loudly and with great conviction and vigor unexpected of someone his seemingly tender age. If I were to describe the sound of the subsequent howling laughter from he and his companions following this racial threat, it would sound like a Victorian-era stereotype that might result in a ban. Unlike Shiloh Hendrix, who had the courage to confront, I slunk away. I had my and my son’s life but not at all my pride. At the time I was still an NPR-American and felt the immensity of White guilt as I had been programmed. The point: Every White American has about six dozen of these stories. Every. Single. Year. What is to be done?
