New: 8 dead. 1 missing. 6 survivors, per sheriff. The 2026 Castle Peak avalanche is now the deadliest ski-related avalanche in U.S. history. Only one incident killed more people since the recreational era began in 1950... the 1981 Mt Rainier ice fall that killed 11 climbers.

SAR teams will have to go in on skis to locate, dig out and extricate as many as 9 victims. Snow continues to fall at 2 or more inches per hour. Notification of next of kin was in progress last night, according to the Sheriff.
