The Office of Foreign Assets Control is investigating whether the pair violated U.S. sanctions through the financing and delivery of goods to the regime as part of the "Nuestra América Convoy." As many as 40 Americans are caught in the dragnet, including Isra Hirsi, the daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar. More subpoenas are expected. The activist class spent years calling sanctions enforcement a fantasy. The Trump administration just turned it into a federal investigation, and it slots right into the wider Cuba pressure campaign alongside the Castro indictment and the carrier group now parked in the region. Hasan got served an OFAC subpoena for potentially violating federal sanctions law.
His response: “the government cares about Cuba aid more than Epstein.”
The pivot is the tell. He’s not arguing the facts of the subpoena. He’s not arguing he didn’t do what they’re investigating. He’s just changing the subject to a name that polls well with his audience.
Federal sanctions violations under IEEPA carry up to 20 years and $1M per violation. That’s the legal exposure he’s deflecting from.
