This is something not often considered by those who haven’t experienced physical abuse. Hand-to-mouth is a relatively intimate interaction. I’m not saying it’s wrong, but it is rather close and personal. Sometimes fingers even come in contact with the mouth. I taught my young children to receive this way, but I will not insist that they do. Hand to hand is safe physically and psychologically. It is approved by the Church, practiced by the Fathers, and it is still reverent, especially since reverence is first a disposition of the heart.

@Moderatemuch @melodymlyons @RealMattFradd Here’s a holy end you might not be aware of, Steve. Many clergy abuse victims have severe PTSD flashbacks if a priest’s hand approaches our face. Esp if our abuse included desecration of the Eucharist, which is very common. Communion in the hand is the only way we can receive

@Moderatemuch @RealMattFradd Priests aren’t angels, they are men. And when a man is causing harm, it is an act of charity to correct. The holy end is that both priest and his flock shall be well

@melodymlyons @RealMattFradd “And misrepresenting a saint does not serve any holy end.” This is your statement, my response is, and criticizing a priest serves a holy end? What is that?

Perhaps the greatest damage from the recent @RealMattFradd interview is that it will lead some to doubt the authority of the Church... and be the trigger that pushes them off the barque. It puts the faithful (especially the vulnerable or confused) in a terrible predicament. I am not under the illusion that Matt will see my posts, but if anyone has his ear, please try to help him understand 1) that he's spreading a falsehood which Mother's order has already debunked, and 2) the massive damage this titillating bit of chatter will cause to souls. Can't put the genie back in the bottle, but he can delete/edit and clarify that what the Church Fathers did was not, in fact, the greatest evil. Nor was it even evil.

@One_That_Rules @RealMattFradd You point out something that struck me the first time I listened. Why would he ask such a question? How very very odd. Evil is not particularly creative or interesting. Th question itself strains credulity.

I didn't see the clip until now, but you are right. The Catholic content creation podcasts are hellish (ok, that is my word, not yours). A man who asks of Mother Teresa, "What is the worst evil you have seen?" is obviously seeking tabloid gossip. I mean, seriously, what kind of question is that? Why do you want to hear about evil?

The Matt Fradd clip of the priest talking about Mother Teresa highlights the danger inherent in content creation. @RealMattFradd should have edited it out as harmful (and debunked) gossip. The priest interviewed has put everyone in a terrible position: either Mother and her beautiful sisters were liars... or he is. Another alternative is possible I suppose but hardly helps. Golly what a disaster. The facts: This story about Mother was circulating some years ago as well and was debunked by her order. She allowed her sisters to receive in the hand because the Church permitted it. In addition to that plain fact, Mother regularly spoke firmly in the language of absolutes about evil. The central message of her public life was that the greatest evils were indifference, lack of love, and abortion. Mother wanted us to focus on that message. The Church canonized her with that message at the forefront. We should ignore the podcast gossip and maybe take the opportunity to read and listen and contemplate what Mother wanted most for us to know.

@LearKentFool @SeamusMickgill @CraigOnan This is a real unaltered photo. It is known that she preferred receiving on the tongue. It is also known that she allowed it in the hand for her sisters. Assuming the best does not mean that we have to ignore what is real.

@Moderatemuch @RealMattFradd Is your position no one can disagree with a priest—any priest for any reason? That no one can criticize a priest? That’s not a Catholic position.

Criticizing a priest publicly… serves a Holy End? If it is true that interior disposition matters more, and that posture is an extension, than it is absurd to say, posture can’t be an Origin, I mean slipping that one in there is a bit much. Of course posture, example, culture is absolutely paramount to Interior reverence or irrelevance.

Untrue. The Church Fathers were certainly reverent and not sinning grievously in their reception. As Mother Teresa clarified herself, reverence is first and foremost an interior disposition. Posture is an extension not an origin. And misrepresenting a saint does not serve any holy end.

@melodymlyons @RealMattFradd The sisters said they never heard she saying it. That's close, but it's not debunking it.

@LearKentFool @SeamusMickgill @CraigOnan Sure. Thats a difficult one to work out in this situation. We can assume the best but we must still grapple with conflicting stories. Maybe this is one more reason why listening to podcast prattle is bad for all of us.

@FrHarrison Also her order formerly debunked a similar statement years ago. One would have to say that her sisters—and Mother herself—were lying in order to believe the priest. She was not shy about speaking in absolutes about the greatest evils. It was the core of her public ministry.

while she frequently did receive on the tongue, this picture seems to demonstrate this priest may not be telling the truth. also she said frequently the greatest sin is to not love God, and to not allow oneself to he loved by Him

@LearKentFool @SeamusMickgill @CraigOnan In charity, mistaken is a possibility. But Father does not think he is mistaken. And the other perspective on his pause and question to Matt is a guilty conscience.

The sisters from her order debunked it when it was said years ago. Father’s word is up against her own sisters who issued a statement saying it was false. You would have to say that *they* were outright lying. So we have a nasty situation here in which it does indeed look like one is lying. Talk about diabolical confusion and division. Terrible.

She allowed her sisters to receive in the hand. And when she had the world’s stage, she talked in absolutes about the greatest evils. and it was always abortion, indifference and a lack of love. Nowhere in her writing, in her interviews, her speeches, nor in her interactions with her sisters was this statement ever repeated. In addition, it is at odds with the Church of antiquity as well as the present. The Church Fathers received reverently in the hand. And whether we like it or prefer it now, it simply isn’t a Catholic statement to call it evil, let alone the greatest evil. There is no evidence outside of one testimony that she did. In fact there’s counter evidence. It seems like a great violation of the spirit of her life and the message she herself chose to highlight to put this story forth. Either Mother was a liar or this priest is lying, embellishing, or mistaken.

@BrianBurne96460 @1armsteve @mikepantile @WalmartThomist Why would I block you? I blocked Steve because he called me a liar. Honest dialogue is not possible with bad faith. I already told him my limitations and he called them excuses. Which is lame since he purports to support the vocation of the home.
