@wildlowerwolves @agraybee The drones are what gave them control of Hormuz, and what will make a naval landing on Taiwan a bloodbath. The missiles were effective, but not without the drones eating up interceptor stocks first.

@agraybee They just watched the other two "superpowers" get their ass beat raw fighting weaker opponents because of cheap drones that Taiwan can locally manufacture in great numbers. I think they leave that shit alone.

@dannaners3 @ProBucks_ @policytensor Obviously this is the correct synthesis: it is indicative of a deep pathology that it required a strategic defeat to make possible a dètente that is clearly in our own interest

@ProBucks_ @policytensor The US didn't need to waste half of its munitions stockpile, cause an impending inflation shock, and humiliate itself on the world stage to accomplish that. Could have just stopped funding Israel and built upon JCPOA lol

This deal is better than the JCPOA bc it provides stronger incentives for the Iranians to comply. It also ties US hands more strongly. And will be fantastic for Iranian people. JCPOA was a poor version of this, not a better version.
(((James Acton)))@james_acton32

I agree we should try to make the most of the MOU and oppose a return to fighting. But the comparison with the JCPOA matters! As a nation we will never learn the value of clear-eyed diplomacy if we don't point out the huge costs to ditching good agreements. (1/2)

@FaytuksNetwork This is just self-evidently true. No country (and certainly not countries as bellicose as U. S. and Israel) has the right to demand another stand naked before her enemies outside of a context of unconditional surrender.

It's extremely disturbing that the hardcore pro-Israel commentators seem to overwhelmingly lament that there isn't a brutal Sunni minority regime suppressing the Shia majority in Iraq AND a brutal Alawite minority regime suppressing the Sunni majority in Syria.

im just a simple country robot but it seems to me we could have gotten this deal by letting rob malley run diplomacy without wasting tens of billions of dollars and burning our munitions stockpiles in the process

You can’t really compare whatever emerges from this MOU with Iran to the JCPOA. Trump still gets enormous credit for militarily destroying a nuclear program that Obama’s deal legitimated. That said, both presidents had to pretend Iran’s thugs and terrorists are statesmen.

@amyklobuchar It is America First, actually. It’s an investment fund, not taxpayer dollars, that will open up a huge, highly educated market to American trade and investment. Trump deserves blame for starting a war, not for making peace when the war failed.

With $300 billion, we could end homelessness, fund cancer research for 40 years, and give every child free pre-K for over 7 years. Instead, Trump is sending it to Iran. This is not America First. Not even close.

@SenAdamSchiff Iran is the natural hegemon of the region—there’s a reason they have kept bouncing back for 2,500 years—and it is manifestly in our interest to be on cordial terms with them. Due to our unilateral reneging on the last deal, that required some good faith gestures. Tough titty.

Wow. Iran gets sanctions relief, the release of frozen funds, the ability to export oil, and a $300 billion reconstruction fund. The U.S. gets a reiteration of the vague promise Iran won’t develop a nuke. Hard to imagine a more thorough capitulation.

@adamjohnsonCHI Support for proxies only matters when the proxies beef with Israel. If you prop up proxies to destabilize half of the African continent you can sell $20 candy bars in every gas station in America. If you impersonate CIA agents to back Jundallah in Eastern Iran, we’ll look away.

There’s also nothing about Israel or the US’s ballistic missiles, support for proxy forces or nuclear energy programs. Why do nominal liberals insist upon scandalizing routine things western countries have when it’s Iran that has them? Why is everyone a strategist for empire?
Kenneth Roth@KenRoth

The apparent text of Trump's deal with Iran reflects his weak negotiating position after his counterproductive war of choice -- nothing barring fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, key nuclear issues kicked down the road for later negotiations, nothing on Iran's ballistic missiles or its support for proxy forces, immediate lifting of US restrictions on Iran oil exports, no clear conditions on Iran's access to its frozen funds.
