Farmer Manikandan was allegedly shot at both his legs by Alangulam police Sub-Inspector Esakkiraja. According to sources, Manikandan, suspected of tapping toddy, was at home when police personnel led by the SI arrived and took him to his farm. Esakkiraja allegedly asked Manikandan to climb a palmyra palm tree to check for toddy. A wordy quarrel erupted between the two, resulting in a fight in which the SI also sustained injuries. Esakkiraja allegedly fired at both of Manikandan’s legs at close range. Sources say around four bullets were reportedly fired and some of them hit Manikandan

Hope conviction of the police officials acts as a detterant for other rowdy police officers who engage in such acts. Its is sad that the Magistrate and doctor who also deserve conviction escaped. If they were also convicted, it can act as a warning for others in lower judiciary and government hospitals doctors.some of whom play hand in glove in such police torture cases.
