UPDATE: STATter911 has learned new details about the controversial death of a five-month old child on Friday. Sources confirm there's evidence that at 12:39 p.m. an initial call came into DC911/@OUC_DC, likely from a relative of the child. But that call was abandoned – the caller hung up – because it wasn't promptly answered. This call also came in just moments before the dispatch computer system crashed. This information also fits with @tednbc4's six p.m. report citing a police report indicating that two relatives of the baby say they called 911 and couldn't get anyone to answer. Deputy Mayor Appiah's recent statement said OUC first heard of a child in cardiac arrest at 12:51 p.m. That experience of loved ones desperately trying to call 911 with no one answering has been a constant theme of 911 users in the District of Columbia. Call answering stats provided by OUC have shown for more than a year that hundreds of people each week hang up before a call-taker answers. That's often because callers are frustrated by getting a recording and not talking with a live person. OUC Director Heather McGaffin confirmed more than a year ago that calls weren't being promptly answered due to a severe staffing shortage. The family of the late Bernard Baker Jr. experienced this at 3:30 a.m. on April 30, 2023. OUC has never confirmed how many call-takers were working at the time Baker collapsed. STATter911 has talked with another family that more recently experienced the same thing as their loved one was dying at a home in Southwest. DC911 always tells people not to hang up and stay on the line. That is often hard to do for someone desperately trying to get help and they are waiting many seconds, if not minutes, for someone at 911 to pick up the phone.
