Across the African continent, women human rights defenders (WHRDs) are rising, stronger, safer, and more connected than ever before. Through our flagship program; Safe Sisters Fellowship, WHRDs gain critical digital safety skills that help them confront online harassment and protect their essential work. Safe Sisters is a dedicated fellowship designed to equip women defenders with the tools and confidence to navigate and respond to the digital security threats they face in both their activism and daily lives. Through a dynamic blend of self-study, hands-on tool practice, mentorship, workshops, peer learning, and small grants, fellows build the expertise they need, and then carry it forward into their communities. As shown below, the Safe Sisters Fellowship continues to strengthen the work of WHRDs across the region, creating a powerful ripple effect that promotes safer, more resilient online spaces for all. Today, the #16DaysOfActivism campaign comes to an end as the world commemorates Human Rights Day under the theme “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials.” Our Director of Program and Administration, @MemoryBandera  wraps up our campaign with a powerful reminder: as we move beyond the 16 Days, ending digital violence against women and girls must remain a daily commitment, not only for women human rights defenders(WHRDs), but for all women and girls to be able to use digital spaces confidently and without fear. Earlier today, we held our 8th Annual Development Partners' meeting. As we come to the end of our current cycle, we provided an update on the impact and progress of our 2021-2025 strategy: “Enhancing the safety and capacity of HRDS in the region for greater resilience and the effective fulfillment of their mandates”. Our Executive Director, @Hassan_shire , launched our new strategy 2026-2030, "Beyond Resilience.” The meeting also provided an opportunity to reflect on two decades of impact, and to discuss mechanisms to reinforce collaboration and coordination between our network of donors and partners. We appreciate our esteemed partners for their continued support in achieving our strategic objectives.

📍This week in Entebbe, @NCHRD_UG is engaging its new Thematic Technical Working Group (#TTWG) members & focal persons through a 3-day workshop in Entebbe. The engaging is aimed at enable the #TTWG and focal persons understand the @NCHRD_UG mandate, the #HRD protection strategies, coordination tools & regional needs—boosting to strategically inform programing at the coalition. 💪🏾 #TogetherWeDefend

✔️Gender mainstreaming isn’t just an add-on—it’s a systematic approach. It involves assessing all programming, budgeting, and decision-making through a gender lens, ensuring policies don’t exacerbate inequalities, and that all genders benefit equally. Our gender mainstreaming training supported by @DiakoniaSverige will really impact our programing and working at the secretariat. #TogetherWeDefend

✍️Today we kicked off our training of selected #HRDs from Karamoja and Albertine sub regions on Monitoring, Documentation and Reporting (#MDR) of the civic space in those two areas. This #MDR training is aimed at equipping #HRDs with tools and skills to track and record violations and abuses of human rights in their sub regions. @asf_eastafrica #TogetherWeDefend

#Uganda ranks 143rd out of 180 in the 2025 @RSF_inter World Press Freedom Index, a concerning sign ahead of upcoming elections. Free, fair, and informed elections require a free press. Protect journalists, protect democracy.

✍️In her remarks, the Board Chairperson @msekaggya highlighted that; "Throughout the year, @NCHRD_UG implemented key programs aimed at strengthening the protection and well-being of #HRDs. These included capacity-building trainings, legal aid interventions, wellness and psycho-social support, strategic advocacy engagements, and the continued operation of our protection mechanisms such as the Rapid Response Fund. @NCHRD_UG also enhanced its engagement with duty bearers, contributing to meaningful policy dialogues on the safety and security of HRDs in Uganda." @EUinUG @DKinUganda @SwedeninUG @DCAUganda @FordFoundation #TogetherWeDefend
