Last week, my post about Boomer life drew some ire from young people who feel we "destroyed the world and their future." (But lots of fellow Boomers liked it!) So for the young people. Here's a peek at life before the late 70s. The life you DON'T have because of us. 🔹Women were often stuck in secondary roles (you could be a nurse but not a doctor). 🔹Employers could deny a woman a job because “she might get pregnant,” and many had to quit when they did get pregnant. 🔹Birth control was restricted or illegal in many places under the Comstock Law. 🔹A husband couldn’t be arrested for beating his wife; it was a “civil matter.” Marital rape wasn’t even a crime. 🔹Women often needed a male relative to co-sign for a bank account or credit card. 🔹Black Americans in the South lived under Jim Crow. Even after it was outlawed, change was slow. 🔹Gay people could not be openly gay or get married. 🔹Information was scarce. You had to access a big library or buy expensive books. No pulling info up on your phone. 🔹Acquiring skills meant finding someone willing to teach you in person. No YouTube or no AI. 🔹Drive by a river and you’d see pipes dumping bright orange or green factory waste straight into the water. Some toxic landfills were so bad, nothing has ever grown there again. 🔹Heart attack? Often a death sentence. No stents. No pacemakers. 🔹Young men could be drafted and sent to war against their will, then come home to a country that called them baby killers and spit on them. Here's the thing. My insurance is trying to determine if they're going to cover Littlest Mans NICU stay and called with questions. Ins: Why did you pick X hospital for your child? Me: I didn't, I was told after I came out of surgery at Y hospital that they were transferring him to X because it was the closest NICU and he was not breathing on his own reliably. They'd already started the process without me. Ins: Okay and why did you pick Y hospital initially? Me: Well I was actively bleeding out from a ruptured placenta and it was the closest one, I was trying not to die. Are you not aware this was an emergency c section at 34 weeks? And also Y hospital is in network. Ins: Yes but if you had gone to in network hospital Z you could have transferred to an in network NICU. Me: *Googles* That's 2.5hrs away. I was bleeding out. I had to receive 2 pints of blood and I was only bleeding for 30 minutes before they started my transfusion. I would have been dead if I drove there. Ins: Well it transfers to the appropriate NICU for your plan, next time please try to go there. Lol okay, next time I'm pregnant and bleeding out I'll be sure to do that. This is insane.

I am proud to stand with @AGPamBondi and @EdSecMcMahon in this effort. My uncle, Ted Kennedy, wrote Title IX and fought for its passage in order to recognize the importance of women's sports. I'm grateful to President Trump for restoring America's commitment to female athletes.

Chloe's outfit today had a higher carbon footprint than a ribeye steak. Chloe does not know this either. 9:30am - Posted on Instagram about choosing compassion. The phone was manufactured in a Shenzhen factory using cobalt from the DRC, where mining operations have displaced local communities and killed an unknowable number of small mammals, reptiles, and insects. The algorithm served Chloe an ad for oat milk. Chloe liked it. 12:00pm - Lunch: tofu stir-fry. The soy was grown in Brazil. Brazil produces more soy than almost any country on earth. The primary reason is soybean oil: one of the most widely used industrial and culinary oils on the planet. The soymeal left over after oil extraction is fed to livestock as a byproduct. Chloe is aware of the livestock connection and finds it outrageous. She has not looked into why the soy was grown in the first place. The answer is the oil. The oil is in her salad dressing. 1:30pm - Drove to the garden centre. The car runs on petrol. Chloe has a Just Stop Oil sticker on the bumper. This is not being commented on further. 3:00pm - Bought a monstera. The monstera was grown in a Dutch greenhouse using natural gas heating. Chloe put it next to the pothos that is slowly poisoning the neighbourhood cats. 6:00pm - Dinner: pasta with cashew cream sauce. The cashews were processed in Vietnam, often by workers in conditions that would prompt significant commentary if they were in an abattoir. 8:00pm - Watched a documentary about factory farming. Wept. Posted about it. Caption: "We have to do better." Chloe is, by every measure she has chosen to measure by, doing brilliantly. By some of the others, the picture is more complicated. I’m seeing, yet again, this surge of hatred for the Boomer generation. I’m a late season Boomer, born in 1961; I’ve worked for nearly 50 years, have been in the same profession for 37 years, I’ve routinely worked 45-60 hours a week. I don’t get why we are so vilified.

Story time! This has to have happened almost 40 years ago. (long tweet warning) Mommy usually cooked, however, one night she was doing something so she asked me to make meatballs to go with spaghetti for dinner. She left the cookbook on the counter open to the recipe. I got out all the ingredients and was about to start making the meatballs when my dad came into the kitchen and asked what I was doing. I said making meatballs. He replied what is all the rest of that stuff and I, rather confused, said the ingredients for the meatballs. He then informed me that all that stuff didn't go into meatballs. I pointed at the recipe and said yes, they do. This went on for a bit and my dad announced that I was being insolent. I said okay fine then we will make them your way. Thus ensued me making balls o'meat, nothing else, and putting them into the pan to brown. The inevitable ensued and Dad was all why are they breaking apart and I said because those are not meatballs, those are balls o'meat! Arguing about how to make the meatballs recommenced. By this point, Mommy got back and came into the kitchen to figure out what on Earth was going on. I explained and she stared at my dad Iike he had two heads and said the recipe is right there, did you really think meatballs are just ball of meat? And, it turned out, he did. I dumped a bunch of seasoning into the meat, finished browning it up, then added the sauce in so we had meat sauce at least. But still. /fin
