I want to be clear about the nu variant. We know what we know BECAUSE South Africa has invested in advanced genomic sequencing. We owe them a debt of gratitude - not punishment. Transparency is critical in a global pandemic. We need to support these efforts collaboratively.

Travel bans don’t work as a way to prevent pandemics. What works is combining national public health with international cooperation. South Africa has just been punished for investing in virus monitoring and for being open on it’s findings, a bad message for other countries.
