I really think Portugal lacks this "Ripple" effect. In SV you see Jack Dorsey walking to the office, it may seem irrelevant, but i think it's a super powerful thing. The only time I've felt something like this was when I saw Carlos Moreira da Silva (worth ~900m) in Shilling's office. I didn't even talk with him, but this sense that he was real and somewhat approachable had this weird effect in me. I think there are equally smart people in SV to Europe and Portugal, but there are so many more that have build amazing companies in SV that the newcomers can look up to and learn from. I think Portugal would benefit a lot by having the few unicorn founders we have talk more, appear more and share more. And become a figure young people look up to! I think @diogomonica moving back to Portugal and appearing in some podcast is a great start.

Two of our worst VC stories: 1. A Sequoia partner passed on Cloudflare because he didn’t think a woman could lead a security infrastructure company. Seriously. 🙄 2. I got introduced to @pmarca. Meeting got scheduled for a Monday, which should have been a clue. I thought it was just a casual meeting. He thought it was a pitch and brought the whole @a16z partnership team. Hilarity ensued. 🤪 At one point one of them said: “You don’t seem very prepared.” Which was true because I wasn’t. I framed the rejection letter they sent.

I was once pitching in a board room at a top 3 VC firm for a $15M Series A. 12 people in the meeting. One of the GPs fully fell asleep. Out cold for 30+ minutes. Nobody acknowledged it. Everyone just kept going. I kept presenting my Series A slides to an unconscious man in a Herman Miller chair and somehow that was considered normal. That's venture capital. You might fly across the country to perform for people who may or may not be conscious. It's a dance. And sometimes you lead and sometimes you follow and sometimes your partner is unconscious. If you're raising right now, just know: every founder has a story like this. The process is weird. The power dynamic is weird. You're not crazy for thinking it's weird. No one talks about it because they want to continue raising. But I'm happy to stick my neck out there. It is weird.

Management consulting is one of the biggest cancers on European talent For some inexplicable reason it became the default destination for smart graduates. So it vacuums them up, works them 100 hours a week for very little money during the most generative years of their lives, and teaches them remarkably few skills that translate into building anything real. Most of the value created is in decks. @augustalabs is the antidote I’ve seen brilliant people who would otherwise be at McKinsey join Augusta instead. They’ll have far more impact there, and learn skills that actually compound Zooming out: AI is the industrial revolution for services, and we are right at the beginning. Nobody knows yet what the right architectures are, what the right products are, what happens to the SaaS, consulting and PE incumbents. Augusta is building at the leading edge of exactly that question, working with some of the biggest companies in the world to implement AI. There is no better front row seat to this revolution That’s why I believe in a few years there will be an “Augusta mafia”, people who spin out to build vertical AI companies off the back of what they learned there Really excited to watch this one go down, and honoured to be a small part of it
