We’re 13 games in, and it’s not hyperbole to say the Tigers’ playoff chances have already taken a pretty substantial hit. It’s amazing how quickly they managed to dig themselves a hole and eliminate almost all hope & optimism we had coming into this season. Detroit was the odds-on divisional favorite, but this is why everyone’s preseason predictions are useless. Until the games are actually played, none of us know anything.

It can't be overstated how horrible it is for NFL discourse that Tom Brady won 7 rings. For the rest of time every QB debate will be reduced to "HE HAS FEWER RINGS THAN BRADY, HE'S NOT THE GOAT" and it sucks. Especially since Brady was NOT A GREAT PLAYOFF QUARTERBACK. Brady is way more Bill Russell than he is LeBron/Jordan/Gretzky. Ask yourself, in a sport where winning in the playoffs is heavily correlated with great QB efficiency, how does a QB with the most playoff wins have such mediocre efficiency? Ask why is Brady the only QB in the modern era with 3+ rings that gets WORSE in the playoffs compared to the regular season! It's luck! Being the luckiest doesn't make you the greatest and Brady is proof of that.

The Tigers are as bad of a watch as the Red Wings right now. Always prefaced with it’s too early for me to really say may piece until the 40 game mark but this is a bad baseball team right now. Mental errors, bad defense, the pitching, the offense…everything is contributing to this mess right now.

“Culture” is a noun that only works as a verb. Every front office claims to have it. Every new coach promises to build it. But you can’t possess culture; you can only practice it, consistently, in the decisions nobody’s forcing you to make. And unfortunately most organizations never figure that out.. So what is culture? Aside from being the biggest buzzword in athletics. Culture is the set of behaviors an organization consistently rewards, tolerates and punishes….regardless of what it publicly claims to value. The gap between what an organization says it stands for and what it actually does when the decision is hard and the result isn’t guaranteed….that gap IS your culture. And it does not lie. Talent matters, and I’d be lying if I said otherwise. Better players make better cultures easier to build. But the mistake is thinking talent creates culture. It does not. Culture is what exists before the talent arrives, and what remains when it leaves. The organizations that get this right build something the roster can step into and thrive within. The ones that don’t are always dealing with the same frustrating issues. Will we ever know the inner workings of the current culture with the Red Wings? Unlikely. Maybe in 20 years when a player gets on a podcast and doesn’t care anymore but certainly not soon. And that’s okay, we don’t have to know. The bottom line in Detroit, Michigan is this: the city doesn’t just want winning! The city wants to recognize itself in how its teams operate. Hard-nosed. Gritty. No shortcuts. Accountability. Everything earned, nothing given. Does that sound like the current Red Wings? That’s not “fan preference” in Detroit. That’s Detroit Sports theology. #LGRW
