@iainherd @SBarrettBar @mariacaulfield It didn't become a legal requirement to have a private pension until relatively recently. When it was made a legal requirement, I predicted that the universal state pension would come under much more scrutiny.

Why would a capitalist country need to run a state pension (using general taxation) when it’s already a legal requirement to have a private pension? It’s reasonable to assume a well-regulated private sector could manage to provision and top-up to those who don’t meet a minimum monthly threshold, far more efficiently than the British state. This of course would be possible if Labour, starting with Brown, weren’t looking for ever creative ways to tax or use private pension funds - whilst public pensions increase ever higher 🤷‍♂️

The reason the Conservative Party is dying, is that they have come to believe that their task is to run the Socialist State more efficiently than Labour What we need is to end the Socialist State A well run Capitalist Country can afford our meagre state pension. 🤡🤡🤡

“I don’t think [the triple lock] is defensible...” Former Conservative Cabinet Minister Michael Gove makes the case for reviewing commitments to the “current settlement” of the pension triple lock, to ease the impact of the UK energy shock caused by the Iran war. #Newsnight

‼️ WTF? Whilst you were distracted … Labour has just voted through powers to FORCE pension funds to invest your money in UK government ‘priorities’. Meaning Labour effectively takes control of up to 10% of your private pension to invest in bollocks. I call that theft. How dare the government take MY money for their projects. WTF?

I'll tell you who does 'rely on benefits'. It's the supermarket chains that pay their bosses millions of pounds a year while driving shopworker wages down to levels that force staff to claim Universal Credit.

Whatever people say, thank God for the Tories and the House of Lords. If it wasn’t for them both holding this appalling government to account and forcing the u-turns we would be far worse off than we even are. Yet shockingly Reform often don’t even bother to turn up for important votes. Having a serious political party matters more than ever now. 💙

RACHEL REEVES IS COMING FOR YOUR PENSION This afternoon in Parliament Labour pushed through a change in the law to allow the government to mandate how pension schemes invest your savings. Here's why Labour's pension grab is so dangerous👇(1/7)🧵

@whitesundesert People who know how things actually work, do not tend to get involved in politics. They prefer doing stuff to talking about it. Politicians are the exact opposite.

The owner will have to engage a contractor to clean the things. That means a contract, and administration. To clean them, they will likely have to prohibit parking under the units being cleaned. Someone has to organize and be responsible for this. Seeing any profit yet?

@worstall @David__Osland Solve the problem in one go by not taxing anyone working for minimum wage. Save on benefits admin, reduce the size of the DWP. Win-win.

@David__Osland As Ikeep pointing out. The claim that benefits are a subsidy to business should be accompanied by an insistence that all in work benefits should be cancelled. After all, we don't want to subsidise businesses now, do we? So, let's stop.

Starmer is not doing whatever it takes…in fact last night he told his MPs to vote against a law that would stop children having access to social media. The @Conservatives are the only party taking this issue seriously.
Keir Starmer@Keir_Starmer

I know parents are worried about social media and its impact on their children’s safety. They rightly expect fast action. Today, I’m calling on senior leaders from X, Meta, Snap, YouTube and TikTok to step up. I will do whatever it takes to keep children safe online.

@dorfman_p A sales pitch, nothing more or less. Greens are panicking as the public are noticing the absurd costs involved with renewables are out of control while not delivering either reliable energy or carbon reductions. It’s a washout of a policy that’s failing in real time.

New Nuclear Is Too Late and Too Costly for the Climate Crisis. Dr Paul Dorfman, Bennett Scholar, makes a clear and evidence based case: new nuclear power cannot play a meaningful role in addressing the climate or energy crises. It is not simply expensive, it is structurally misaligned with the speed, scale and affordability required for effective climate action. In the report, ‘Debt, Delays, Dependencies. Why Public Banks. Should Not Support Nuclear Power‘, Dr Dorfman’s contribution makes clear that new nuclear power represents a policy dead end, diverting scarce resources away from climate‑effective solutions. The opportunity cost is enormous: every pound invested in nuclear is a pound not invested in renewables, energy efficiency, storage or grid resilience. New nuclear is already too late. The renewable transition is happening now – and smart policy must move with it. Bennett Institute 14th April 2026 bennettinstitutesussex.org/stories/nuclea…

The 7 Senate Democrats who voted against blocking a proposed weapons sale to Israel: Richard Blumenthal (CT) Chris Coons (DE) Catherine Cortez Masto (NV) Jacky Rosen (NV) Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) Chuck Schumer (NY) John Fetterman (PA)

!! 40 out of 47 Senate Democrats voted to block a proposed weapons sale to Israel. This one was for Caterpillar bulldozers. Next vote is for a proposed sale of “dumb” bombs. Last time the Senate voted on an Israel arms sale disapproval, 27 Democrats voted yes. Was 19 before that

@KulikovUNIATF @ParentsvsVape Bullshit alert!! The only way this study could be 'conclusive' is if the subjects cognitive ability were measured over time. As it stands, all it says is e-cig users may have higher cognitive impairment than non-smokers to start with. @cjsnowdon

New study raises concerns about #ecigarettes and brain health 🧠⚠️ A recent study from Thailand looked at 232 young adults aged 18–25 and found that e-cigarette users had a significantly higher risk of #cognitive impairment compared to non-users. Nearly 40% of e-cigarette users showed signs of potential cognitive #decline, vs. less than 1% of non-smokers. Even more striking: those who didn’t plan to quit within a month had 6x higher odds of cognitive issues, and those without plans to quit in 6 months had 4x higher odds. While the study doesn’t prove cause and effect (it’s cross-sectional), it adds to growing evidence that #vaping isn’t “harmless” for the developing brain. nature.com/articles/s4159…

School is a very important part of education. But education is about much more than school. A child is in school for under 20% of their time. So what we really need is an overarching, joined-up, inclusive, child-first vision. And then a long-term thoughtful plan to implement it.
