Berlin One gets the impression that Orbán and his team are acting as Moscow’s proxies. Vance, who also maintains close ties to Moscow, is due to visit Orbán on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see who, apart from the FSB, will be in Budapest on Tuesday. Should Vance bring the Western security architecture into disrepute, it would be a sign that he, too, has defected to the communists. In Budapest, Berlin and Washington, there is a fear that the security architecture of Europe, the US, Germany and NATO has been betrayed. In this regard, it is time to bring Orbán to justice.

America's achievements in Operation Epic Fury are astounding. But as President Trump has made clear, there's still work to be done to protect the entire civilized world from the threat posed by the Islamic Republic. Time for our allies to step up to the plate.

1/2 He denies his Lord, denies being one of his followers, and thereby forfeits his leadership mandate: “I do not know this man.” Peter goes out. He slips away. He shirks his responsibility. And then the full misery of the situation and his pitiful role becomes clear to him. He is mortified with shame, and he is not ashamed of his tears. Failure is neither the first nor the last word. And with his life, Peter confirms what is for me the most beautiful sentence that Holy Scripture has handed down in the Gospel of John regarding the relationship between human beings and their Creator: “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” (John 21:17) You know everything. This is the expression of a faithful confidence that can move mountains. In this spirit, let us resist the villains, whether they be called Orban, Vucic, Rama, Putin or mullahs, who despise the civilised world. Let us celebrate Easter Vigil today with friends in freedom, by an Easter bonfire with good drinks, conversation and food, wherever you may be.

Germany, Easter 2026 I am at home in my native region on the Baltic Sea, currently in my favourite church, St Aegidien in Lübeck. J. S. Bach’s St John Passion is a truly moving experience. Themes of suffering and hope. Even after 300 years, the themes of betrayal, suffering and redemption explored in the St John Passion still move me deeply. They are highly relevant today. First, the story of Jesus’ suffering is told by the Evangelist John, and then supplemented, expanded, interpreted and reflected upon through the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. What more, pray, is there to say, explain, play, hear and understand? “We are all amateurs compared to him,” Robert Schumann said of Bach. Hence, just a few amateurish remarks on the history, the misunderstandings and the impact of this great musical Passion narrative, concluding with a brief reflection. The chorales and arias inserted by Bach into the evangelist’s narrative—which do not form part of the plot—convey a very different message. They draw the devout listeners into the events and reflect on their own entanglement in evil, caught between indifference and incitement: “Jesus, look upon me too …”
Not: “Jesus, look upon the sinners.” “I, I and my sins … they have brought upon you the misery that afflicts you.”
Not: “You, you and your sins”, but: “I, I and my sins”. The congregation’s chorale says: “If I have done evil, stir my conscience.”
Not: “If you have done evil, stir your conscience.” In the St John Passion, Bach does not ask about collective guilt, but about individual responsibility. This is the question currently being asked by people in Ukraine, Iran, Hungary, Serbia and Albania. The truth is: far too many have for far too long effortlessly separated one thing from the other, as if they had nothing to do with one another. Guilt, morality, freedom and responsibility for families still belong together in the 21st century. This justifies resistance against the war criminal Putin, against the mullahs, who are not Muslims but villains who oppress the Persian people and subject the civilian population to terror. It justifies resistance in Hungary, Albania and Serbia against the autocrats who are plundering those countries. In my view, the stories of suffering in the St John Passion undoubtedly rank among humanity’s great texts and unique musical compositions, even if they need not necessarily be counted among the very pinnacles. This monumental work of music history illustrates what art in general, and music in particular, can express, convey and achieve through their respective means, and what strength they can give us. This evening, a particular passage in the St John Passion struck me deeply. The Apostle Peter: ‘Then Peter remembered the words of Jesus, and he went out and wept bitterly.’ For me, as a Christian engaged in politics, this passage is both a warning and an encouragement.
The significance of this sentence arises from the context. Jesus’ life is drawing to a close. He has bid farewell to his disciples. He has set out his legacy. Between Gethsemane and Golgotha, only a few hours remain, marked by despair, denial, mockery and humiliation. The human and divine aspects of his life culminate until it is accomplished. None of his closest companions harbour any illusions about the gravity of the situation. In his desperate resistance, Peter resorts to violence against police brutality and state authority. With his sword, as John recounts, he cuts off the ear of one of the henchmen. Now greater expectations rest on no one than on Peter. Though he is not regarded as Jesus’s favourite disciple, he is the Chosen One, the representative, the rock upon which Christ intends to build his Church. In the courtyard of the high priest Caiaphas, Peter is ‘called upon’ for the first time in this prominent role – in both the literal and figurative sense of the word – and he fails. 1/2

NEW: Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell and Democratic Sen. Chris Coons issue joint statement defending NATO after Donald Trump said he’s “strongly considering” withdrawing the U.S. from the alliance: “The only time NATO has gone to war has been in response to an attack on America. NATO troops fought and died in Afghanistan and Iraq alongside American forces. The United States must not take this sacrifice – nor our allies’ commitment to make it again – lightly. “Alliance disputes are as old as the alliance itself. Americans are safer when NATO is strong and united. It is in our interest for all allies to tend this unity with care. The United States joined NATO in 1949 when the Senate voted to ratify the NATO treaty, and the United States will remain in it. The Senate will continue to support the alliance for the peace and protection it provides America, Europe, and the World.”

Berlin Marco, You should have informed us in good time before you started the war. It was a mistake not to inform the Allies beforehand. The de facto blockade of the strait was predictable, as was the fact that this would affect large parts of the global economy. Germany and the UK, in particular, are providing you with intensive support. If Trump now thinks he can strike a deal with the mullah regime, that would be a complete failure on the part of the US government. Continuity of purpose is now required; the matter must be seen through to the end. Negotiations with the mullahs are a no-go.

Berlin Well, some of my family helped build the USA – indeed, helped build the USA, just like Paul Henze – and have lived there since the 18th or 19th century. In the USA, it’s just like in Europe: There are all sorts of people. I’m thinking of the conflicts that Adams, one of the Founding Fathers of the USA, had to endure. Ultimately, he was successful and signed the first free trade agreement with Prussia, now Germany. So we have the same DNA, but different perspectives. But we still recognise our shared potential. The Tuareg have a very poetic, vivid language. One of them once said to me: “Alone, you make rapid progress; together, you go far.” We should keep this phrase, spoken by a simple nomad in Africa, in mind.

NATO's long-term success depends on its members' cooperation against shared threats. European allies have known that Iran can cause chaos in the Strait of Hormuz. What they need to do is act and show they are committed to the alliance as much as they pay it lip service.

Berlin It would be desirable for the US President to take the view that the adversary is not only to be found in Tehran or in the person of the KGB officer and communist Putin, but also has proxies, such as Orbán in Budapest or Rama in Tirana. All members of this rogue group are socialists linked to one another. The commitment to Iran is right, but we should not lose sight of the connections to Ukraine, Venezuela and Cuba. Representatives of the ‘Axis of Evil’ are also appearing in these countries. It is all interconnected. In this regard, it would be desirable for the West to adopt a unified position on Ukraine and Iran – both countries are two sides of the same coin; we must look more at the bigger picture. theins.press/en/inv/290911

Victory in Iran ultimately depends on changing the shape of the regime so that it is no longer a threat. That doesn't mean we'll see some modern-day Thomas Jefferson take the reins; but we should create the space for the Iranian people to take back their country.

President Trump is spot on by encouraging our European allies to take control of their own destiny regarding energy.  Irrational climate policies, decommissioning nuclear power plants and refusing to responsibly drill for oil and gas have caught up to the Europeans. We’re not going to let that happen here.  Can you imagine how the Iranian regime would terrorize the world if they had nuclear weapons? They were incredibly so close. Thank God President Trump acted in the nick of time. It is now clear the Obama-Biden-European approach to containing Iran’s missile and nuclear program was a miserable failure.  The long range missiles being fired were able to hit European capitals. As President Trump suggested, stop complaining and take action regarding the Strait of Hormuz and otherwise.

If you count on the lazy and biased media to tell you what’s going on in Washington regarding @DHSgov funding, you are making a mistake. Here’s the reality. The Department of Homeland Security is not being funded and its employees are not being paid because Democrats refuse to vote for funding unless Republicans agree to hamstring @ICEgov and @CBP. The Democrats’ demands are not reforms – they’re handcuffs.  I’m willing to work on DHS reforms, but our country’s national security cannot be held hostage. I have no intention of giving in to hostage-taking and unreasonable demands that impede federal agents’ ability to do their jobs and, in some cases, put their lives at risk.

Berlin Vucic – the propaganda minister of the war criminal Milošević and a supporter of the war criminal Putin – must no longer be allowed to hold talks in Belgrade; he should be declared persona non grata on the Balkan Peninsula. The same applies to Vucic’s partner Rama in Tirana. Croatian President Milanović has reacted appropriately with his decision. However, it would be desirable for him to act even more decisively. In the 1990s, an armed conflict broke out between Croatia and the rogue regime in Belgrade, during which many Croats were tortured and murdered by Vucic’s friends. Vucic must be brought to The Hague to face charges of war crimes. He, Putin and Lavrov should no longer be welcome in the Balkans; their time is up.
