@ESPNRefNHL the high stick not called on a stick that hit the Avs Malenski was deemed a follow through however it was not a shot, it was a pass or rim attempt below the goal line. Is a high stick legal any place on the ice as long as you're making a play at the puck?

@spittinchiclets In a March 2025 NHL game, referee Kelly Sutherland "accidentally" blocked a clearing attempt, the puck hit a diving Sutherland in the neutral zone, enabling the scoring opportunity, rather than him overturning a call by the Toronto replay center.

@bigweeels @RycroftMark @hoosierjm26 Players can be in the crease. It's not 10U. Intentional or deliberate contact is the rule for a penalty. You can see MacK's entire lower body's shift after the hit from the video taken from the corner. Your lower half doesn't move that way without forcible contact.

@Hupperware @RycroftMark @hoosierjm26 I have the skates going a bit deeper in the crease than you…it’s probably somewhere in between. At the end of the day, Mackinnon is going through the crease regardless of whether Nurse makes incidental contact with him while making a play on the puck.

Nate would not make contact with Ingram if Nurse does not drop the shoulder into Nates hip on the way thru. Mackinnon’s feet aren’t even on the ice as Nurse blew him off his feet. Mackinnon was on a trajectory to miss Ingram by a few inches. Am I missing something out there???

@TequilaOperator @jimmathesonnhl Right. For the penalty to be called it requires intent. If an attacking player has been pushed, shoved, or fouled by a defending player so as to cause him to come into contact with the goalkeeper, such contact will not be deemed contact initiated by the attacking player.

Can we just chill Avs fans. You hit a goalie that hard in crease whether Nate meant to do it or Nurse bumped him as he drove net it is a penalty. Goalie was cut, didn’t return, Two or 5 mins up to refs. MacKinnon didn’t argue

@Hupperware @spittinchiclets I don’t think MacKinnon meant to hit the goalie, but those lines don’t even match up with the skates. His right skate is pointing directly at the goalie.

@shaawniaam @spittinchiclets You can have all 5 guys skating through the crease. This ain't 10U hockey. Intentional or deliberate contact with the goalie is the rule. "Nate didn't mean to" takes away that threshold.

@TequilaOperator @jimmathesonnhl That's the Hocky Canada's rulebook, not the NHL. Similar language in the NHL rulebook that leaves it up to the official with the most money on the game.

@jimmathesonnhl I’m not an Avs fan. I thought it was a little much for it. However the rule states that it’s the refs discretion to assess a match/game misconduct if he deemed it to be charging the goalie. Did he charge? A little. Was it egregious and warrant a game misconduct? Not IMHO.

Skates angled away from the crease. He made an effort to play the puck. A MINOR shouldn't be a guarantee here. They ejected him after this. What the actual fuck?

From the flimsy penalty on Kulak, to the no call on Bouchard, and now this atrocious call on MacKinnon, this has been a really poorly officiated game. That's saying it kindly. There's no way that should have taken 10+ mins to review. #goavsgo @thehockeynews

Nazem Kadri was shoved into Connor Ingram. The ref made the "he was pushed in" motion. All parties involved saw it. Connor Murphy proceeded to push Kadri's face into the ice. No penalty called.
