Today in Juba, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development convened the second #IGAD University Council, reinforcing its commitment to sustained dialogue and the exchange of experiences among university decision-making bodies across the region. The forum was hosted by the University of Juba and graced by the Minister of Higher Education. IGAD was represented by the IGAD Head of Mission to the Republic of South Sudan. The forum brought together university leaders from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, and Uganda, fostering collaboration and strengthening regional academic partnerships. Notably, all five public universities in Sudan were represented, alongside two private universities, highlighting strong engagement and a shared commitment to advancing higher education in the IGAD region.

IGAD Calls for Equity in Global Governance at UNGA On behalf of the Executive Secretary, the #IGAD Permanent Representative to the UN, Mr Cherinet Alem Hariffo, delivered a statement at the United Nations General Assembly marking the 60th anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. He noted that racism persists not only in societies but also within global governance systems, pointing to Africa’s continued exclusion from permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council. 🇺🇳 IGAD at the United Nations | One Voice for Humanity Today at UN Headquarters in New York, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) delivered its statement during the Preparatory Committee on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Humanity. IGAD reaffirmed its commitment to the Charter of the United Nations, international law, and the protection of civilians. IGAD emphasized that crimes against humanity must never be normalized, and that the international community must strengthen both prevention and accountability through a fair, neutral, inclusive, and consensus-based process. IGAD also stressed the importance of respecting the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereign equality, territorial integrity, and non-interference, while ensuring that international cooperation remains practical, credible, and effective—especially through capacity building and technical support for States facing resource constraints. The IGAD Head of Mission to South Sudan, Dr Victoria Anib, today received a courtesy call from Mr. Gregory Bledjian, Ambassador Designate of Germany to South Sudan. The two discussed the IGAD–Germany partnership and ongoing cooperation in migration, climate action, education, and health, as well as the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

AU–COMESA–IGAD Election Observation Mission to the Uganda Elections 2026 The IGAD Secretariat has deployed its Election Observation Mission to Uganda, joining the Joint AU–COMESA–IGAD Election Observers led by the former President of Nigeria, H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, in Kampala, ahead of the General Elections scheduled for 15 January 2026. H.E. @GEJonathan will be supported by Shemsudin Ahmed Roble, Member of the COMESA Committee of Elders, and @AbebeMuluneh, Director of @IGADPeace. Advancing True Decolonization Through Partnership and Equality Today, the IGAD Permanent Representative to the United Nations, @cherinet_, delivered a statement on behalf of the Executive Secretary during the UN First Committee, under the agenda item on Decolonization and Related Matters. IGAD reaffirmed that decolonization remains a living process, one that calls for dismantling structural and technological dependencies that continue to shape global relations. IGAD believes that true freedom lies in self-reliance, knowledge ownership, and inclusive governance. IGAD has convened technical consultations in Ethiopia to inform the review of the IGAD Strategy 2021–2025 and shape the development of the 2026–2030 Strategy.
