@Fenix__Digital @aviationbrk “FAA design criteria for jet airliner cockpit windows (detailed in 14 CFR 25.775) require the windshield and supporting structures to withstand a 4-lb bird strike at design cruising speeds without penetration.” So yeah, a police collapsible baton doesn’t have a chance.

@JimmytheCat7 @aviationbrk Actually that's not for birdstrikes, but to whithold up to 10 PSI differential pressure at high altitude. Thus, windscreen and cockpit windows are about 5 cm (2") thick. Laminated. It's quite similar to bullet-proof crystals. Unbreakable. The only way into it is cutting metal.

A NetJets Cessna 680 Citation Latitude crashes on a highway while making an emergency landing to Laredo International Airport, Texas. The crash was reported around 10 p.m. It was not immediately clear how many people were on board or their condition. Nobody on the highway was injured during the crash, police said. @RichardVen4h9 @xsphi Electronics are an easy thing to blame. You haven’t lived until you are driving a rusty vehicle where the throttle wire doesn’t return on its own and the parking brake doesn’t move…

@xsphi Since I’ve had a vehicle that accelerated on its own, (3 different drivers, not one experienced it with any other vehicle), and I’m a right ft only driver, I’m not buying this statistic. I’m sure people are getting blamed for faulty electronics! Saw it first hand!

why aren't new drivers taught to use their left foot for the break when driving an automatic? seems likely prevent most of the (admittedly mostly minor) ~16k peddle error crashes per year in the US, and probably a lot of serious crashes as well due to improved break time.

@alexman_hdz @aviationbrk Sure, but it’s clear the society in general needs a lot more training on the basics. Things like how to properly use a fire extinguisher should be taught in grade school.

Always fun watching animal rescue vids. There’s a channel that spends a lot of time helping seals that get wrapped up in fishing lines and other garbage, a decent number of the younger animals will sit there and stare at them after being released. Ocean Conservation Namibia is the channel on YouTube.

@Axaxia88 There's some weird shit I read about mammals having some "wtf you doing" moment when humans save them from perceived death. If they go from freaking out to accepting death, but then are saved, they go error 404 and stay docile while figuring it out.

@ghartman02 @LibertyPDX1 The wind made this weekend not so bad. It was still damn hot. And we will still have highs between 80 and 90 for at least the next week, but it’s also coming into summer so that’s to be expected for the next few months.

@LibertyPDX1 Wondering that myself. It has been hot before. When I was a kid, it was hot in the summer and none of us had AC. And I have an odd rule of thumb. If it's breezy I don't care. A gift back then IMHO was an approaching thunderstorm, that wind felt so good.

@randallwcarlson @EthicalSkeptic Gonna need a lot more details. What areas? What “geologically short” time frames? Important data points for any analysis, and leaving them out is suspect, not to mention a lack of any hard data or conclusions whatsoever.

He points to one of the most dramatic climate shifts in recent geological history: the sudden expansion of massive water bodies across what is now desert, followed by their complete disappearance. The evidence is unambiguous. These weren't small ponds or seasonal wetlands. The scale of water volume required to create the features described by Brecker, Ewing, and Heesen indicates a fundamentally different climate regime, one dominated by sustained rainfall and fluvial processes. Then it vanished. The transition from that wet, lake-filled environment to the arid desert conditions we see today represents an extreme transformation in a relatively short geological timeframe. What could drive such a profound shift? The answer lies in understanding natural climate variability at scales that dwarf anything in the modern instrumental record.

If MREs are good enough for our troops, why not for welfare? What if EBT was replaced with monthly MRE deliveries, 8 cases per person. No misuse. No luxury. Just food. Needs met. Problem solved!

Cute theory, let's play it out. A monkey hoards a trillion bananas. The troop, enraged, beats him to death. They gather around the pile to feast at last. But... oh wait, there is no pile. It turns out the "bananas" were shares in a banana-launching company the dead monkey founded. The shares were worth a trillion because he was alive to run it. Now he is dead and the stock is worth $0. The retarded monkeys have clubbed their way into a recession. But it gets worse. Half the "bananas" were tied up in a rocket that supplies bananas to monkeys on the far mountain who had no bananas at all. Another chunk was tied up in a little satellite dish that beamed banana coordinates to the troop after a flood took out their trees. So now they realized they beat to death the only monkey who knew how the dish worked. So the monkeys sit there. No bananas. No rockets. No coordinates to get more banananas. Just a dead body and a powerful sense of fairness as they all now became infinitely poorer. OH And somewhere a smaller monkey watches the whole thing and quietly decides he will never build anything in front of these animals again.

But what kind of knife are we talking about? I always have multiple blades on me. Leatherman has a couple of blades and a saw or file, and I always have a pocketknife on me either a Benchmade or Spyderco. I also always have a flashlight, and typically a firearm with a few reloads. Somehow the hell do you open stubborn bags of snacks that won’t tear open? How about opening boxes? Cutting food? Everyone should always have a knife. And if I ever have to use mine on a person, you can bet THEY are paying for its replacement, cuz I ain’t gonna use a knife that has touched another humans blood on my food.
