I was born a Roman Catholic, but never found refuge in the Catholic faith. Having said that, when I first heard James speak, he spoke immediately to my life values and I instinctively connected with his ‘people first’ political values. He has remained consistent in his beliefs because they represent who he is and that’s why I know he’s resonating with everyday Texans. He knows how to articulate the argument for his candidacy because he speaks from his heart and that is a rare thing in politics today. A Target cashier told me she’s worked there for 6 years and never once hit 40 hours. Always 38. Never 39. Never 40. $15 an hour. $2,200 a month before taxes. Rent is $1,350. No benefits. No sick days. No health insurance. She came in with a fever last month because missing a shift meant missing rent. Target made $4 billion in profit last year. She can’t afford to be sick. We decided that’s just how it works. I think about that every time they ask me to donate to their charity at checkout.

Because one night her brain misfired and the system handed her a $37,600 bill for surviving it. The American healthcare system doesn’t fail people. It was designed this way.
