@NEVERLOGGINGOUT I have a running theory that 10 Things I Hate About You is set in Seattle precisely because 1999 straddles the Seattle of this image (Kat) and the tech/Microsoft Seattle of the future (Bianca)

Seattle in the 80s was the last frontier. It was this little satellite parody of the real world. But was surrounded on all sides with empty nothingness. It only modernized fairly recently. These kids are the last lineage of those that were the kinds of people who “headed west”

@CigsMake This shit drives me crazy, I live in the very core of a major city and your description describes my life basically to a T. The American dream didn’t die, it’s being kept alive by millennials in D+50 urban core neighborhoods

A 30-year-old in 1980 owned a house like this working at the local factory. Married six years with three kids. Weekends meant Little League games. Both sets of grandparents lived within five miles. The kids would attend the same high school he did and grow up with the children of his own friends. This is a dying concept

@PanasonicDX4500 I did my MA in Galway years ago — I remember being at some house party and the fridge had a “Free Palestine” magnet (the host was in no way overtly political). I said “i really like your magnet, thats great to see” and I got a puzzled “well obviously, of course”

I went to Ireland like a decade ago and it was the most publicly pro-Palestine place I’ve ever seen. I was in Dublin, Cork, Galway, and Belfast, and you’d see Palestinian flags and murals on every third street.
Samantha Smith@SamanthaTaghoy

Dear Zohran, St Patrick’s Day is about Ireland. Irish history. Irish culture. Irish people. ONLY IRELAND. It is not about Palestine. And it’s an insult to the Irish to hijack their sacred day with your Middle East political agenda. Not everything is about you.

@madisontayt_ When I was like 12 my family hosted a French foreign exchange student, and she was a problem for a lot of reasons, but I remember one day she was giving my parents hell for Vietnam. They were like “ok, the French in particular don’t get to do this” and she was like why not?

@bourbonenergy @barely_th3re Dawg, I’m a Grady baby. I love Atlanta more than any city on the planet and that’s why I get so damn upset with that sentiment. My point is that by any metric SF is more full and people deal with less congestion than ATL. Traffic is the main argument behind “Atlanta is full.”

it's especially annoying because the reason people no longer dress up to fly is clearly a response to planes becoming unbearably cramped and uncomfortable. why would you wear a three-piece suit to be shoved into a 1ftx2ft prison for hours?

@infinite_jaz I was raised by a Northern Irish Catholic dad who knew he was with Palestine, even if he couldn’t articulate why. My sister did a Fulbright in Jordan, I visited her, she took me to the West Bank and in seconds I moved from “ok Palestine” to “this is the most important thing ever”

I’m sorry to be self-righteous but it is really true what they say. When you visit the West Bank, witness the brutality of the occupation, see its inner workings, and get to know its victims, I don’t see how it’s possible to stop it from consuming you and altering the course of your life. Making it stop becomes completely urgent. I wish this experience on all of my detractors.

@offbeatorbit Yeah but they did. Like, $200. They didn't stiff the server. They were a table of 4 people, not a party of 20. The US tourism industry is tanking. Yes a part of that is Trump, but a part of that is also this sort of greed demands for 'tips' for the most basic services.

@CartoonsHateHer A family of four girls went to my high school (yes, one in every year) and their mom would pull them out to go shopping sometimes and everyone was absolutely aghast and incredulous every time (as they should have been!)

Ok I am actually fascinated by parents repeatedly taking their kids out of school in the middle of class to go shopping. I did not think this was even an option??? Like I'm pretty sure if I tried to do this my kid's school would be like "sorry you have to leave" lol
The Wretched & Joyful [email protected]@wickedandproud

@ratapsst @qo01q @CartoonsHateHer The problem is that it isn't "once in a while" - it's once or twice a month, and the kids miss important in-class assignments, tests, etc. One of my friends teaches chemistry and has a few kids failing because they've managed to miss every single lab.

@roryisconfused The fact that you don’t have to name it and we know what you mean ends the dialogue, right? You absolutely cannot do that for the great American novel.

Something funny about the debate over the great American novel is that you could ask “so what’s the great Irish novel?” and then you immediately go well, it’s obviously that one

One can obviously speak up for other great Irish novels — Beckett’s Trilogy, Edna O’Brien’s ‘The Country Girls’, McGahern’s ‘That They May Face the Rising Sun’, one could go on and on and on, but it’s that one

The number of people who believe doctors “hate” patients is heartbreaking. No one goes into medicine because they despise patients, what a vile assumption. Are doctors perfect? No. We are human. We make mistakes. Many of us are stretched thin. But at our core, many of us are here because we care, deeply. We know that many people have been failed by the healthcare system. We understand that frustration; many of us are patients too. But it is devastating to see that pain exploited by those selling grift, conspiracy, and false hope. I will never stop calling that out. If you’ve made up your mind that doctors don’t care, that truly saddens me. Because most of us are doing our very best to fight for our patients every single day.

I love guerrilla TV production. I produce our shows on a tiny budget — smaller than a conventional commercial television producer could ever imagine — but even if I had unlimited money, it’s how I’d make TV: Just me, a two-person crew, and maybe a friend and fellow tour guide to join me on screen. Reporters often ask if they can shadow me in Europe, and generally my answer is, “Sorry…not allowed.” But I’m a big fan of @NatBCo, and I had a hunch that if I let her spend a day scampering around London with me and my crew, she would do a great job capturing the creative challenges and joys we have making our shows. With this video clip and Natalie’s @washingtonpost article, which you can read in Sunday’s paper or at wapo.st/4oKkUTl, you can join us as we film our upcoming one-hour special on London — coming soon to public television!
