@bendreyfuss When I was in Chile, I went to the museum of Pinochet atrocities and I was a bit surprised they didn’t talk about the CIA at all. His rise to power was framed entirely as a product of local factors. And yet we tend to learn he was completely abracadabra’d into power by Nixon.

I read this book about the history of the CIA recently and a lot of the cia coups people whine about are actually just things where we paid some newspaper to write mean articles and foment anger. Not a crime to do that! (Sometimes we did more than that)

With all due respect and love to Reb Dovid, I think this blurs the line between dialogue among different types of Jews, and legitimizing and equating true Judaism with a sinister heresy that has cost the Jewish people millions through intermarriage and assimilation. Going to a Reform temple (itself halachically highly problematic) to discuss Jewish denominations implies that Reform is a legitimate way of being Jewish. Which it is not. Suggesting that we need to shift from a legal framework, namely halacha, to a vague conception of Judaism as a 'language,' and agreeing to disagree with a movement that has institutionalized transgression of the Torah, indirectly gives credence to their version of Judaism. Seeing ourselves as superior to people who live in opposition to the Torah and to Hashem is a good thing (ויגבה לבו בדרכי ה'). Again, I have nothing but respect and love for Reb Dovid, but Jewish unity is only valid under the banner of the Torah.
