My optimistic theory has been that Goldwater '64 was to Reagan '80 what Bernie '16 may be to the Dem Nominee '28.
I don't know if this will happen, but for all the liberals' eyerolling of Bernie for not winning certain elections, his kind of impact happens over multiple cycles.

It’s a monument to motivated reasoning that some folks have convinced themselves that Kamala Harris, who in nearly a decade on the national stage had an unbroken record as a orthodox progressive and who endured relentless attacks from Trump on that record, lost because she was a moderate.
