Q: How does the #Ebola virus spread from one person to another? A: Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, or tissues of an infected person, including someone who has died from the disease. It can also spread through contaminated objects such as bedding, clothing or medical equipment. Health workers and caregivers are at higher risk if infection prevention measures are not strictly followed. Q: What are the common signs and symptoms of #Ebola infection? A: Common symptoms include sudden fever, weakness, headache, muscle pain and sore throat. As the disease progresses, patients may develop vomiting, diarrhea, rash, stomach pain and, in some cases, bleeding. Symptoms can appear between 2 and 21 days after exposure to the virus. Q: Which groups of people are most at risk of getting #Ebola? A: People most at risk include hunters, family members caring for infected relatives, health workers without adequate protective equipment, laboratory personnel handling samples, and individuals involved in unsafe burial practices. Communities with frequent population movement or limited access to healthcare may also face increased risk during outbreaks. Learn more about #Ebola disease: who.int/news-room/fact…

Important discussions today at the high-level roundtable co-hosted by @AfDB_Group, @WHOAFRO, @AfricaCDC and the UK government on the ongoing #Ebola outbreak in #DRC and #Uganda. Strong coordination, rapid financing and preparedness in high-risk countries are critical to protecting lives, livelihoods and regional stability. Africa has overcome Ebola before. With strong leadership, solidarity and timely action, we can do so again.

My thanks to @Dr_JeanKaseya and Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar for convening today’s meeting of African Health leaders. We are facing an extremely serious and complex #Ebola outbreak in the #DRC. It will likely get worse before it gets better. What makes this response especially challenging is: 1. Delayed detection of the outbreak, meaning we are now playing catch-up with a fast-moving epidemic. 2. Intensified fighting in Ituri and North Kivu, and significant distrust of outside authorities among some local communities. 3. The absence of approved vaccines or therapeutics for the Bundibugyo virus strain. But we know this virus, and we know how to stop it. We have contained every previous Ebola outbreak, and we will contain this one too. The question is how quickly we can do it and how many more lives may be lost before then. Thank you @PresidencyZA Ramaphosa for announcing a financial contribution to the response, an important step in supporting @AfricaCDC. I also appreciate the leadership of @_AfricanUnion Chair President @ymahmoudali. We will not rest until this outbreak is brought under control.

𝐐: Are vaccines available to protect people against #Ebola? 𝐀: Vaccines are available for some Ebola species, particularly Zaire ebolavirus, which has caused several outbreaks in Africa. However, vaccines are not yet widely available for all strains, including Bundibugyo ebolavirus. This makes early detection, contact tracing, infection prevention and community engagement even more critical during outbreaks caused by these strains. More #Ebola cases are being detected as response is scaled up. An increase in cases does not necessarily mean that the response is failing. It reflects the oucome of intensified efforts that are helping to uncover the true scale of the outbreak.

As surveillance efforts have been scaled up in the #DRC #Ebola response, more than 900 suspected cases have been identified so far, including 101 confirmed cases. In Ituri province, the epicentre of the outbreak, nearly 5 million people live amid ongoing conflict. Today, 1 in 4 people are in need of humanitarian assistance, and 1 in 5 are internally displaced. The violence is forcing people to flee, including health and humanitarian workers. This is severely impeding efforts to scale up Ebola contact tracing and identify infections early enough to provide supportive care. Ongoing insecurity and fear are also fueling mistrust within communities. @WHO and humanitarian health partners maintain a presence across Ituri, including in some of the hardest-to-reach and most insecure areas. Communities are facing not only the threat of Ebola, but also a wide range of diseases. Our Health Cluster partners are supporting the delivery of: * maternal, reproductive, newborn, child, and adolescent healthcare * treatment of severe acute malnutrition with complications * mental health services, wound care, and support for survivors of sexual violence * medical supplies * routine immunization * community health services Delivering a comprehensive package of healthcare services is essential - not only to meet urgent health needs, but also to build the trust that is critical for an effective Ebola response.

𝐐: Why is regular #handwashing important during an #Ebola outbreak? 𝐀: Handwashing helps reduce the risk of infection by removing viruses that may be present on hands after contact with contaminated surfaces or people. It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect individuals, families and health workers during outbreaks. Learn more: who.int/emergencies/si…
