@Thom_Wolf came to @southpkcommons today to talk about what @huggingface is building in open robotics. Few things stuck with me: Two years ago there was basically no open-source robotics community on the software side. HF looked at this and said: this is LLMs in 2020. So they built a $100 robot arm and an expressive little robot called Reachy you can build in 2 hours. People told Thomas "never let users build their own robot, it's a terrible experience." His 10-year-old daughter built Reachy herself and wouldn't let him help :D I also asked him about bridging the gap between hardware and software teams. His honest answer: it's a tough problem, and mostly a people problem. Teams cluster by discipline and dismiss each other's hard problems. The founder doesn't need to be an expert in both, but needs to understand enough to respect constraints on both sides and prioritize correctly. Otherwise you get "throw it over the wall" engineering where each team blames the other. He's seen very few companies push both sides really well. And honestly, you can see this pattern everywhere (autonomous driving, chips + AI, Apple's hardware/software integration). The best systems companies are vertically integrated in thinking, even if teams are specialized. I've spent my career in ML and software and recently started exploring the hardware-software boundary, so that last point especially resonated.

@eladgil LUMA in Mission Bay - great if you like waterfront walks + a safe neighborhood with a few parks that recently opened (China Basin, Bayfront, Crane Cove). Good food options are still limited and the vibe is less 'san franciscan' in this area though.

What are the best nice hotels in SF at which to stay? If you are optimizing for -Seeing the city (good food,... ) -Being safe (low crime, can actually walk out the door with minimal fear of random event) These may be two different spots. Suggestions?

In 2024, I realized that when I'm low-energy and tired, the key was not to rest by doing nothing, but to actually spend more energy (assuming enough sleep) by: - swimming - biking/hiking/walking - unrelated side projects Wasn't intuitive to spend more energy to get more.

Oh boy, would I like to see the post-morten for this Crowdstrike issue! To go through the entire release process, on a driver level change, with something so apparently easy to hit, without anything having blocked it... I have so many questions!
