@LesBowen Exactly - every QB has preferences of plays he likes more than others but it’s the coach’s job to put a functional offense on the field and part of that is getting the QB to feel more comfortable with the parts of the playbook he doesn’t like as much

Agree. If the QB suggests something and you’re really thinking “oh no we can’t do that,” then what you need to do is make sure he does not do that, instead of complaining about it in hindsight.
Coltrane@cgmoff

@LesBowen I also Trust McManus, but two things stood out to me. The 4 vert exchange looked more like a lost OC and Jalen and the HC just standing there. And Patullo and Sirianni come off as relatively unscathed despite having one of the worst offenses we’ve ever seen.

@PierreB3_ My takeaway was that he had so many contradictory quotes from different sources that the article doesn’t tell us anything at all beyond how the author chose to frame them

Couple quick reactions to the McManus story (I’ll go into detail a bit later) • Jalen can’t say he doesn’t care how it looks schematically and then not be open to change • The big takeaway will be he’s resistant to coaching but the story literally says, “One team source says Hurts is "as open as he's ever been" to changes.” • There was also the notion that he has too many “yes” men around him - but then later doubles back and says, “Difficult conversations continued between Hurts and members of the organization this past season, a team source added. Even members of his inner circle knew Hurts played a part in what went wrong last year and addressed it with him, a source close to Hurts said.” • I don’t agree with the team and Jalen being at a “crossroads” - I definitely think this is a bit of a tilting point for this era but I find it hard to believe Jalen isn’t going to be the QB in Philadelphia for years to come. Lurie loves him and it’s hard to find good and consistent QB play in this league - they know this internally • I think everyone was extremely disgruntled with the way the offense went about business last season and that led to a lot of frustration on the field and off the field. Not only Jalen and A.J. but Smitty as well. • Bottom line: I don’t think we know anything that we didn’t already know besides a few added details after reading that story but the frustration is clear - Sean Mannion has a huge task ahead of him.

@ehannan73 @Jason_OTC @JasonKelce The fact is that most teams around the league don’t ask for the money back in situations like this so the fact that Detroit routinely does is something players who sign there should account for.

@Jason_OTC @JasonKelce they gave him money to play and he didn't play. It's not more complicated than that. Taking shots at them for being "petty" and advising players to "take note" when dealing with Detroit is just saying your quiet part out loud.

This is interesting. It feels like it’s obvious that Frank retired because he was physically fighting through injuries and pain, and it got to a point that he no longer could play the game in an enjoyable, effective, or healthy way. The whole purpose of a signing bonus is to be a guarantee up front that insures a salary irregardless of performance metrics, or most importantly injuries that could compromise your career in the future. What makes this interesting is that Frank likely retired “voluntarily”, meaning, he wasn’t declared medically unfit to play by a doctor, which allows the team to ask for a prorated amount of his signing bonus back. Had he been medically deemed unfit to play football by a doctor before he retired, the team wouldn’t be able to recoup part of the signing bonus. Let me say this first, if a player truly just retires without reason, or because they’ve lost the desire to play, I completely get and acknowledge teams should be able to recoup compensation when players don’t fulfill there contractual obligations and agreements. However, Frank was known for being hurt and playing through injuries most players wouldn’t play through constantly. Broken foot, a torn pec, multiple knee injuries, back issues. There was always something, and I’m sure he was continuously dealing with multiple ailments to try and continue playing the game. His body clearly had deteriorated to a degree that made football no longer a viable option, physically, and probably mentally. In my opinion, the signing bonus is supposed to protect players from future physical ailments limiting their availability on the field, that’s one of the reasons you want more guaranteed money upfront. So while I get that the team has a right to ask for money back, in the spirit of the agreement, I think it’s bullshit Frank is being asked to return money. This was clearly a player that the game had physically taken its toll on, and his body was clearly no longer holding up to the rigors of the NFL. It wasn’t just some player deciding he didn’t want to play anymore, it wasn’t that simple, and these signing bonuses are there to protect players from the inevitable injuries they incur on the field.
Ari Meirov@MySportsUpdate

The #Lions made Frank Ragnow return part of his signing bonus after retiring early, continuing a franchise policy that dates back to Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson, per President Rod Wood, via @DaveBirkett: “Our precedent goes all the way back to Barry Sanders… And I think the reality is, they’re not paying back their money, they’re returning our money, because they were paid in advance for services that they hadn’t completed.” More here: freep.com/story/sports/n…

@BigRobEnergy @joedeleone I’d say he’s overpaid in the sense that they’re paying him more than they’re getting out of him, but that it’s entirely because they’re not using him for the things where he provides the value they’re paying for

I feel like ESPN has no idea what to do with Kelce. Overpaid and just throwing shit against the wall. Get this dude on the board breaking down offensive line prospects, I’d be far more interested in that than him at the Masters

ESPN is shipping Jason Kelce off to The Masters next week, per @_DavidRumsey. Kelce will serve as an on-course reporter during the Par 3 contest at August after making his debut at TGL earlier this month.

@DodgersDeadly @Quickstats_Mets @tangotiger @forgottenclips The overall point still stands, though - it’s 50% and it looks like a different amount than 50%, so folks arguing for the 50% standard would be pissed when a pitch that’s 0.1% further away is called a ball because it *looks* like more than 50% is in the zone

For those arguing for "50% of ball" standard to be a strike, please note your mind will be blown when you consider a ball that goes to a corner Because in image below, 50% of the ball *is* inside the strike zone. It doesnt LOOK like 50%, but if you like trig, we can prove it

@LesBowen Do we know he ever even wanted some sort of advisory job? They hired an OC with a fundamentally different OL philosophy to him so he’s not the coach anymore and maybe at that point he just wanted a clean break.

Having Stout involved in some sort of advisory job — like, getting his opinion on a prospect’s film — ought to be a no-brainer. The Eagles either don’t understand this, or Nick has damaged the relationship beyond repair.

@MindYaBiznaas @JoeVasilePBP I think ultimately everyone needs to come into it with a better attitude. Players (and fans) need to stop chirping the umps for missing borderline ones that are near impossible to call consistently and umps need to stop getting so salty that their calls are being overturned

@MikeDro_ @TheMGibson I kinda feel bad for them because they don’t have any visual markers for the strike zone anymore. When you use a percentage of the batter’s height instead of just looking at his knees to see where the zone ends I’m not sure it’s possible to call the close ones consistently

I do--and that sounds correct. I've been trying to find the regulation and how it's worded. Usually a regulation wouldn't overrule a rule (a regulation is designed to explain a rule, not overrule it). But... what happens if ABS isn't working/malfunctions or just isn't set up (for example the little league game)? Do we call a completely different strike zone for that game?

Umpire incompetence or a Rulebook/ABS Mismatch issue? 🤔 This pitch may have been both: -a Strike according the rulebook strike zone (3 dimensional/starting at the front of the plate), and -a Ball, according to ABS (2 dimensional/measured at the middle of the plate).

VAR isn’t perfect and that’s because we have humans implementing a subjective rule book. It’s still a net positive for the game and has corrected most of the biggest clear errors. People dislike it but they hate massive errors that go against them more that you can see clearly on replays.

There is an unfair layer of data in this stuff where the NFL thinks they can just expand and grow and add more, and it will work because we are addicted to this thing and consume all of it as much as we can. But I don't think MOST fans want more of it. And we don't want it all over the world. And we don't want it on Thursday nights. My 2 cents.
