Overall, Americans took 9/11 pretty calmly. Notably, there wasn't a mass outbreak of anti-Muslim sentiment and violence, which could all too easily have happened. And while GW Bush was a terrible president, to his credit he tried to calm prejudice, not feed it 2/

So it's 9/11. Hard to remember now how large the terrorist attack loomed in our national psyche; after all, in death toll Covid-19 is already the equivalent of 60 9/11s. But a few thoughts and recollections 1/

@galeabrewer Why are you scared of the cops Gale? You’re an elected official - it doesn’t need to be a conversation! Tell them to remove the barricades now!

I would strongly prefer we go back to the way the streets were before the protests, with no barricades at the entrance to the streets. Having conversations with them about how to make this happen. We must all do our part to de-escalate, have courtesy and respect for all.

@A320Lga Walked by that exact spot not 15 minutes ago and there was a Driscoll Foods truck parked there while the guy walked a delivery up Bergen. And a bus waiting at the light right behind it 🤦‍♂️

I can’t say I buy all of the “COVID will completely upend x” claims, but one thing that COVID *should* upend are peak-only bus lanes. Car volumes aren’t all that peaky, and for reasons of equity, efficiency and sustainability, it’s imperative we make off-peak transit v attractive

It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here. Tonight the NBA returns. Proud to see that the league has taken this pandemic seriously. While this year might look a little differently, the same spirit of basketball is at play. I’ll be tuning in. Let’s go!

This video—of a protester in New York City being thrown in an unmarked van—is terrifying and should be unacceptable to everyone who respects the constitutional rights this country was founded on. There must be an immediate explanation for this anonymous use of force.

NYC is taking after Portland - a trans femme protestor was pulled into an unmarked van at the Abolition Park protest - this was at 2nd Ave and 25th Street

@OpenNYForAll @NYCSpeakerCoJo That's a bit unfair. Couldn't a neighborhood be given a choice: allow a homeless shelter or pay for one elsewhere? Why depress property values & chase out the highest taxpayers in a self-defeating way?

Every neighborhood, and particularly wealthy ones, should expected to house the homeless. @NYCSpeakerCoJo should be ashamed for working with wealthy constituents to help close a shelter in his district.

To recap, Mayor de Blasio today: -still hasn't seen video of cop punching homeless man -not worried about placard abuse -not too concerned with police commissioner's incendiary comments -not involved in policies related to policing protests -no new details on child care plans

@petersterne @errollouis @THECITYNY Maybe you should keep an open mind as to whether the ADAs knew the defendant was an assault victim at the time they wrote the case up? Things are not as black and white in crim justice as many have lately suggested.

The Manhattan DA is dropping the assault charge against the guy who was punched by a cop. This only comes after @THECITYNY published bodycam footage and there was public outcry. Until then, the DA's office was happy to charge someone with assault for *being punched by a cop*
Gothamist@Gothamist

UPDATE: The Manhattan District Attorney will dismiss the assault charge, with the possibility that the remaining misdemeanor could be dismissed in the future. His lawyer said this "falls woefully short." gothamist.com/news/cops-punc…
