Covid broke something in education that nobody knows how to fix. Before the pandemic, 13% of American students were chronically absent. Today it's 26%. The number doubled and the recovery is stalling. At current trajectory, we don't hit pre-pandemic levels until 2029. If deceleration continues, we stall above 20% permanently. The math on outcomes is brutal. Chronic absenteeism accounts for 27% of the decline in math scores and 45% of the decline in reading scores since 2019. Students who are chronically absent are 7x more likely to drop out before graduating. And 75% of absences are now "unexplained." No parent called. No email. Schools literally don't know where the kids are. This isn't just American. 76% of university academics globally report lower attendance than before Covid. A Queen Mary London professor had one student show up from a 70-person master's cohort. Australian universities are scrapping lectures entirely because nobody comes. UK students now average 23 hours of paid work per week alongside full-time study because loans haven't kept pace with inflation, so they skip class to cover rent. Covid didn't just close classrooms. It ran a global, years-long experiment proving that attendance is optional. Lectures got recorded. Assignments went online. Parents worked from home while their kids sat next to them. And when schools reopened, the social contract that "you show up every day" had quietly dissolved. An entire generation watched the adults around them decide that physical presence was negotiable. The "75% attendance is mandatory" joke lands because universities worldwide are trying to enforce a norm that a generation experienced breaking in real time, and nobody has figured out how to rebuild it.

@htmx_org REST is the only thing keeping frontend and backend devs from having to actually sit in the same room and talk to each other.

@jessfraz It's a consequence of react not having Single File Components like Vue or Svelte. But it proved out to be a great improvement in efficiency even for those frameworks. I used to think like you. In reality, if you use a UI library, you won't produce elements with that many classes

I really don't understand tailwind, all it did is make everyone inline styles & everything becomes bifurcated inlined styles. It's full blown anarchy there's nothing blocking people from doing shit thats gross in one place, I have to write eslint rules to not descend into chaos.

AI is quietly deprecating GitHub. Agents do not need branches, PRs, or CI/CD rituals. They want to ship code straight to the cloud. The rsync renaissance is here. High availability. Zero bloat. Faster loops.

@RyanCarniato Technical decisions are more important because they're the foundation of the whole vibe codes mess, and the only thing that might prevent it from falling apart too soon. And not knowing the technology means you can't understand when it's about to fall apart.
