UK #starlings have declined 57% since 1995. That is equal to a loss of 2.4 mio breeding pairs in just 20 years. Installing suitable #nestboxes in areas where starlings still nest, is likely to help increase local populations. Any #birder living near paddocks should have one.

@PaulGri29126854 Yes. Box should be installed at least 5m high, ideally a singular tree to reduce squirrels interfering with the box. Highest chance of getting starlings is if you have a colony nearby. If there aren't, chances are super low. Use measures in cm in column D. Entry hole is 4.8cm.

Nature isn't always what it seems.
This video shows the fascinating and - at least to me - unexpected behaviour of a male starling intruding a starling nest box, with the breeding pair trying in vain to save their clutch.

Very nice record of a Dutch female #kestrel wintering in England. The reverse is also not unusual. If you see a kestrel in winter, you can never be quite sure where it's from, unless it's a territorial adult male. They tend to spend the winter around their nest site in England.

I have always dreamed of getting one of our birds retrapped in Africa. It has finally happened! We ringed this Reed Warbler on the Salisbury Plain in August 2024. It was retrapped this morning 4459km away at Kartong Bird Observatory in The Gambia. A truly brilliant record.

@paulinthelakes Hi, here the instructions. Use the measures (in cm) from column D which is for starling. The most important bit is the entry hole which is 7cm in diameter. 1) front panel, 2) side, 3) back, 4) bottom, 5) roof, 6) wooden bar to fix the box onto wall or tree. Fix it min 5m high.

Have you put up your #starling #nestbox yet? Starlings are a red-listed farmland bird. They can be easily helped by anyone in rural areas by putting up a nest box like this one. This video is from a village in East Hampshire today. @HOSbirding

Its more natural to leave them alone, unmanaged
Alas some farmers believe this myth. Ol'boy farmer here says he leaves his hedges alone for wildlife. Only works for a few decades, then decline

Another 42 starling boxes delivered by Petersfield Men's Shed today. I will put them up in suitable places in the next few weeks. #Starlings have declined by 57% since the mid 1990s. #Nestboxes can help recover them.
