The Regime Fears the People. Bulawayo Town Hall Meetings Blocked. The Constitution Defenders’ Forum (CDF) notes with deep concern the continued shrinking of the democratic space in Zimbabwe following the decision by the Zimbabwe Republic Police to block our planned Town Hall meetings in Bulawayo. CDF had duly notified the authorities of our intention to hold two peaceful Town Hall meetings, one at Njube Hall and another at Stanley Hall in Makokoba, where our Convener Tendai Biti, together with our Deputy Conveners, Chairperson, and other Defenders, was scheduled to engage citizens on the urgent national question of defending the Constitution. Despite following the required legal procedures, the police have rejected our notification under the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act. This decision is yet another clear attempt to close democratic space and silence citizens who are demanding respect for constitutionalism and the rule of law. This latest action must be understood in the context of the sustained campaign of intimidation and obstruction that CDF has faced over the past days, weeks, and months. Our members have been harassed, our meetings frustrated, and our leadership subjected to threats and surveillance. The recent siege at our Convener’s offices and the presence of suspected state agents are part of the same disturbing pattern. The authorities appear deeply afraid of the growing national movement to defend the Constitution. What they fear most is an informed and mobilised citizenry determined to resist any attempt to mutilate the Constitution or extend presidential term limits through unconstitutional means. CDF wishes to make it clear: no amount of intimidation, threats, or administrative obstruction will stop Zimbabweans from defending their Constitution. The blocking of peaceful Town Hall meetings only confirms what many citizens already know, that the democratic space is being systematically closed because those in power fear the message of constitutional defence. Zimbabwe belongs to its citizens, and the defence of the Constitution is not a crime.
