Gas boilers are not 95% efficient (in the real world they’re lucky to be 85)… Great to see the reception to our unique transparent dashboard showing the real world performance of all Octopus Cosy Heat Pumps installed in customers’ homes. Of course, some people who like burning stuff are always looking for “gotchas”. One of the most common is the assertion that “modern gas boilers are 95% efficient” This is horseshit. Just like cars hardly ever deliver the official miles per gallon figures, so boilers underperform too. Whilst an A rating boiler does indeed achieve 92% in lab tests, in the real world 80-83% efficiency is the norm for an “efficient” gas boiler (and older ones are much worse. Like 70-80%). There’s surprisingly little investigation into this - but here’s an official field study assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a75149b… If you’re interested - a condensing boiler typically needs to be set to 50 degrees - it then needs a return temperature of 30 degrees to ensure proper condensing - and needs to be running long enough to get into condensing mode —> characteristics pretty similar to a traditional heat pump in its most efficient mode! For which heat pumps are slammed by fossil fuel lovers. - it also needs thermostats set correctly and to be right-sized for a property whilst most are oversized Of course, if any boiler manufacturer wants to put their full fleet online so we see the real world data, we could compare to Octopus’s Cosy Heat Pumps. Being generous to boilers, if they have a typical efficiency of 0.85 and a real world Cosy has efficiency of 3.7, an Octopus heat pump is 4.35 times more efficient. With electricity being about 4.3 times more expensive than gas after April, this makes a heat pump cheaper to run. But a heat pump can use smart tariffs to access cheaper electricity, so it’s typically quite a lot cheaper to run - the real world data says someone on a heat pump has electricity at a 3.7 multiple per unit vs gas - so will be paying 17% less on average to use a heat pump than they would a gas boiler. Even more so if you can terminate the gas supply and save the standing charge (once you have a heat pump, you can get an induction hob and ditch the gas hob..) - another £130 annual saving from using a heat pump. Octopus’s huge investments in R&D and manufacturing are bringing costs down all the time, and you can see why the fossil industry is scared. Like canal owners looking at trains in the 19th century… Of course - Scandinavia’s already there. Norway is a huge gas producer but heat pumps are their dominant heating, whilst only 5% of homes have gas.

@OctopusEnergy it is nearly 9:00 pm New Year’s Eve and the temperature is 3C and my 14 month old Octopus Energy installed heat pump has not been working for over 12 hours. Despite being told that an engineer would arrive with a replacement part he/she failed to turn up.

After cancelling our Christmas travel plans @OctopusEnergy promised the engineer would come today to fit our car charger, 4th attempt, we just got a call to say no one is coming. Absolute lying shambles. We even checked last night & this morning. Disgusting. Come & get your car.

It's been just over a year since I swapped my Hankook tyres for @MichelinTyres Crossclimate 2 tyres and i did it at a normal tyre centre. 🫨🫨 I never thought i'd be able to tell the difference but i really prefer these!!! I can't quite believe i'm saying that! I couldn't be any less interested in tyres but when i'm driving i feel the vehicle has more grip with the road. (I don't know how i feel that but i do!)

@g__j What has happened to Octopus? I recommended them to my daughter cos we had fantastic service, but now feel so let down - they have an 8 year old child & will be without any heating until 'sometime next year' when Octopus told her a heat pump would be in by end of November

@g__j Hi Greg, just had a Tesla Powerwall and Solar installed great. Then it broke unfortunately your aftercare has been really really slow to respond. My belief is there is a build issue with the Powerwall and Tesla need to be encouraged to swap these units out

@john_oes still having a disaster with the EV charger. Finally got it fitted on 25th, after having the logistical and increased cost caused by delay for two months, and it’s been offline for six days and won’t work. 😩

Is anyone one else having a nightmare with @OctopusEnergy EV chargers? Ours was delayed by two months once we’d paid and were locked in. So we’ve ended up out of pocket using stations. Now it’s been fitted it doesn’t work after one week. Offline! 😩

@OctopusEnergy @g__j as an existing customer we were excited to get our EV charger fitted by Octopus. Arranged fitting for 8 Aug, engineer phoned in sick and moved to 9 September. Today no explanation, random email saying 9th October. EV car arrived a week after 8 Aug!

Yes I’m very aware of how IOG works, I do not have a compatible vehicle and I’m not going to pay £800 to change chargers. You guys installed me a @GivEnergy battery/solar system. I liked the idea of having the same brand EV charger and asked both Octopus and @GivEnergy if IOG compatibility was coming with the GivEnergy EV charger and was told it was coming soon by both, so went ahead and purchased, and here we are 15 months later and still nothing.

Who else made the most of the super cheap EV charging this weekend...? 👀
Guy (M0GUY)@guypl

@OctopusEnergy, thanks for the half price IOG charging last night. Couldn't have come at a better time. Just got back from my 360 mile round trip and the battery is a little flat. Now back to my usual 80% charge (60kWh) for only £2.10. What's not to like!

@Zarch1972 @OctopusEnergy @energystatsuk @CadentGasLtd Hey Mick, the gas network operator will often do this after there has been no gas usage at the property for a period of time (typically after 12 months). It means you won’t have gas in the pipe between the road and your house, so likely sensible to let them.

With us going to a full electric house (ASHP / induction hob etc ) meant we got @OctopusEnergy to remove the gas meter and cap off the supply at the house around a year ago. @energystatsuk energy-stats.uk/goodbye-gas-me… We've just had someone from @CadentGasLtd come and inspect the meter removal who said they would be looking to dig up the road and cap it off further away from the house. Citing potential gas leaks and safety to my wife. There's going to be no charge to us and we are happy to have no gas coming to the house, but it seems an awful waste of time and money to do this. Is this common practice @john_oes?

@g__j @OctopusEnergy many early adopters of EVs have older chargers and now are considering new chargers, but you have a fixed price regardless of whether there is one there already. Quite a lot of the work is already in place, there should be methods of getting a lower cost
