@markjaquith Aside from aluminum, the only good long-term reason to recycle is to keep landfills from filling up as fast. Reuse of glass is also a good strategy.

@johnpbloch @WordPress I'm keeping an eye on them. I know somone in that project. Not sure if this is their plan or if they are building another single point of failure, just not one owned by the mad king.

What the @WordPress community needs at this point is a distributed Plugins and Themes repository. (Strictly, IMHO)
I would love to see it git (not github) based. Anyone (a host perhaps) could fire up a node and register with another public node. Once registered, it would distribute similarly to DNS.
Plugins are not uploaded to the network, but the network is notified of their existence. Similar to #PHPs composer and packagist, but distributed.
A Plugin could be created to tell a WP instance to use this distributed system instead of WPO. (or, when this becomes popular and matt disables the ability to do so, a hack of core could be distributed...this will happen)
The thing I like about this is there is no single point of failure. The plugin would know of multiple nodes so even if one is down, they could easily query the second or third in the list.
An ambitious entrepreneur could create a private node that applies virus and security scanning to plugins and themes before they are listed in their private repo. This would ensure that the plugins or themes listed in THEIR version of the repo are secure. Someone like @wordfence would be ideal, but since it's distributed, there could be multiple secure for-profit repos.
There are some obvious security holes in the idea but nothing that cannot be solved. The happy path on this idea would take less than a month to code up. If we could get a couple of hosts to agree to host the first nodes (I'm looking at you my favorite WordPress host, @SiteGround ) then I believe it would start to take off. It solves the problem of WPO being used as a hammer against any group or the community at large. (It WILL happen)
BONUS POINTS: In addition to a node, enterprising hosts could actually mirror the plugins themselves. (git pull) This way, their customers would always have access to the last one they pulled down.
It's just a thought.

@CoenJacobs Based on community adoption rates, this certainly does qualify as unpopular 😅
