Drove across Miami today. Lots of suburbs. Zoning totally ruins America. Nobody would agree, but allowing a small local shop in every area would totally change America Maybe even cafes. People would sometimes walk outside. Driving to get milk is insane

@Caledoniaz @tomfgoodwin That's somewhat true, though more so if we're talking about the apex of zoning: the HOA. With that aside, there's a far more simple reason many folks don't want a cafe, bar, or restaurant within 5 mins: it's orders of magnitude more peaceful, even w/o the crime.

When people are confident that public disorder and crime (including homeless encampments and panhandling) will be dealt with swiftly and effectively, they do not feel such an urgent need to protect themselves through economic and geographic distance. A portion of the anxiety over density is having to deal with low-level crime and public disorder.
