Bravo @MagnusRanstorp, you have been completely vindicated. You and a few other brave souls have blazed a lonely and hazardous trail. But #Qatar and its hired hands stand increasingly exposed as the poisonous ideology and activities of the #MuslimBrotherhood come under scrutiny.
Magnus Ranstorp@MagnusRanstorp

Two related news items about academics with links to Qatar 1️⃣ I was previously publicly attacked by Andreas Krieg, who accused me of being an extended arm of the United Arab Emirates in Sweden. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) and the Swedish Psychological Defence Agency were also drawn into these unfounded allegations on the website Politics Today (published by SETA, which is affiliated with Erdoğan’s think tank). (Krieg has been linked to academic institutes in Qatar.) I reported this to King’s College London for defamation—and I was upheld in the internal process. The outcome was that Andreas Krieg published a public apology addressed to me on X. I later wrote about this in Swedish daily Expressen:  expressen.se/debatt/tro-och…  Andreas Krieg’s apology can be found here. x.com/MagnusRanstorp…  Now, the same Andreas Krieg has once again come under scrutiny. In legal proceedings in Northern Ireland, he lost a defamation case against a well-known journalist, further raising questions about his credibility and judgment. irishlegal.com/articles/paul-…  ⸻ 2️⃣ In the next step, activists turned to Farid Hafez, editor of the European Islamophobia Report and affiliated with the Georgetown University Bridge Initiative. The Bridge Initiative subsequently published a so-called “factsheet” targeting me, Lorenzo Vidino, the Danish professor Thomas Hoffmann, and researcher Sameh Egyptson. The purpose was obvious: to discredit us for our scrutiny of the Muslim Brotherhood. Article in Danish about ”Bridge Initiative and Factsheets” weekendavisen.dk/samfund/broder…  This activity has now been noted at the highest political level in the United States. A report from the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce on antisemitism at American universities specifically identifies the Bridge Initiative. The report states that the organization presents itself as researching Islamophobia, but in practice engages in casting suspicion on critics of political Islam. Particularly noteworthy is that the report—based on previously undisclosed documents from Georgetown—shows that the Bridge Initiative received $630,000 from Qatar in May 2024. The report can be read here. edworkforce.house.gov/news/documents…  The overall picture is clear: when academia, activism, and state interests converge, research risks becoming a tool for political influence—rather than a source of independent knowledge.

AAA says gas prices are up 78 cents a gallon from a year ago — from $3.10 to $3.88 nationally. For a car getting 25 mpg, that means driving 1,000 miles now costs about $31 more in fuel. 100 miles, $3.10.

Dan is always thoughtful. Even where we disagree on many aspects of Operations Epic Fury/Roaring Lion — though not all — he remains one of the most sensible and respected Democratic voices, and a model for serious, constructive criticism.
Dan Shapiro@DanielBShapiro

For my new followers, who may not have read all I've been writing, let's establish some order about my views: 1. Iran, under the current regime, is a violent, aggressive actor that threatens many neighbors, sponsors terror, calls for Israel's destruction, has much American (and other people's) blood on its hands, and oppresses the Iranian people. The sooner it is gone, the better. 2. I've called for major support for the Iranian people in their struggle for freedom. 3. I favor pressuring the Iranian regime in many ways, and I'm not opposed to using force against the Iranian regime: I supported Operation Midnight Hammer last summer, for example, and can imagine other operations I would support. 4. I am opposed to regime change wars in the Middle East. I've said from the beginning that I don't support Trump launching this war, this way. 5. Israel has its interests, as does any nation. When our interests align, as the often do, we should work together. When they do not, we should pursue our own path. (I also have many criticisms of the policies of the current Israeli government.) We are security partners, which serves our interests, but we can also disagree. Israel's security is an important US interest. But we also have leverage in this relationship, and it is completely legitimate for us to use it. 6. Trump launched this war without clear strategic objectives, adequate assessment of and preparation for the risks, and without any attempt to inform the American people of what we are doing and why, or seek the support of Congress or key allies. It's his decision, and he bears responsibility for it, no one else. 7. The U.S. military has performed brilliantly, at both the military strategic and operational levels. They will always have my support. Commanders have been straight with the American people about the military objectives they have been tasked to pursue. But the strategic objective they need from our political leaders (is it regime change?) remains muddled. 8. The war's early successes in taking out Iranian leaders and degrading many Iranian power projection capabilities provided a window in week 2 for Trump to claim victory and take an off-ramp. Not a perfect end, but achieving the main military objectives before Iran (the weaker party, but one with cards to play), could impose higher costs. He likely missed that opportunity, now that Iran is blocking the Strait of Hormuz. Of course that can't be allowed, but the costs of reversing it -- in blood and treasure, global economic damage, reduced readiness to deal with challenges from China and Russia -- and with minimal allied help, may be very steep. 9. It was predictable that strikes on Iranian energy facilities (by US or Israel) would lead to Iranian strikes on Gulf energy facilities. Even if the intent was to message Iran that their energy industry could be at risk if they don't open the Strait, that's a costly and needless escalation. But it is totally unjustified for Iran to strike Gulf nations who have been non-combatants in this war. 10. I served in the Pentagon, coordinating Middle East policy during wartime. I know how the IDF and CENTCOM work together. An Israeli strike on the South Pars gas field was unwise. But it could not have been carried out without U.S. knowledge, and explicit or implicit approval. 11. There is a narrow window following the Israeli and Iranian strikes, and Trump's Truth Social Post (untrue, but possibly useful in this context), to deescalate away from further strikes on energy industry targets in either direction. That will still leave a very challenging situation to unwind, but would be the best near term development. 12. If you've read this far, have a good night.

Israel shown it can reach any part of the regime’s repression network — anytime, anywhere. That comes from superb intelligence penetration, including support from Iranians. There are Iranian boots on the ground— while Israeli jets/drones dominate the skies. More time needed.

Stephen Harper was PM in 2013-2015 with a very happy and successful Canada. Justice Trudeau took over in late 2015 and drove Canada far down the happiness rankings. Socialism. Uncontrolled immigration. Woke obsession. The playbook on how to make your people unhappy.

"How China Is Quietly Helping an Isolated Iran Survive" @WSJ wsj.com/world/how-chin… China is Iran's most important economic partner. Roughly 90% of Iran's 1.6 million barrels a day of crude oil exports are sold to China, providing Tehran with the equivalent of tens of billions of dollars of revenue each year. Iran manages a complex, clandestine shadow-banking network globally that is facilitated by China, U.S. officials allege. China's teapot refiners pay for Iranian oil in the Chinese currency, the yuan, and Tehran uses some of the money to buy products in China that are then shipped to Iran. According to U.S. officials, Chinese companies continued, however, to be a critical supplier of goods with potential military applications, such as motors that have been used in Iran's Shahed drones, chemicals for rocket fuels and electronics for an array of weapons. China-based commercial satellite firms have participated in business exchanges with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Pentagon said in December. Last year, two ships linked to an Iranian state company left China loaded with 1,000 tons of a material that could be used to make a main ingredient for a solid propellant of some 260 midrange missiles, The Wall Street Journal has reported. In mid-2025, Iran ordered thousands of tons of missile fuel ingredients from China, according to Journal reporting. The Chinese government has said it is unaware of specific orders but maintains strict control on so-called dual-use items that have both civilian and military applications.
