@larsso1X @RealDanODowd It did slow down. It stopped for goodness sake. ? That's why it comes to rest in between the truck and the smashed car. And then slowly navigates to the left/right and exits the scene.

@orenjacob @RealDanODowd Just because it was able to in that particular instance doesn't negate the fact that slowing down is the better move.

Hey @DoorDash , your interface for pickup or deliver is WAY TOO SIMILAR. A single missed button press and you’re hosed (or, rather, I’m hosed). If I AM PICKING UP , make the interface look VERY DIFFERENT than the map with timing for delivery. Come on.

@Libertas4586778 @DCelticsfan @TrungTPhan Over the last 50 years, yes it has declined. Has it been a "fumble"? No. Or, in what way do you feel that decisions made by Hollywood (studios, unions, talent above/below line, funders) have been self-inflicted mistakes (aka "fumble") ?

@DCelticsfan @TrungTPhan Most? By $ value? By hour produced? I'd be curious to see how that actually plays out. Also theatrical? TV? Streaming? By what categories?

@TrungTPhan also, what can California do vs foreign govt's offering tax incentives for production which drew part of the industry out? That's not a fumble, that's being attacked by foreign gov't subsidy.

@orenjacob Article is framing it as fumble from total industry domination to losing share UK, Canada and other parts of US. Maybe more of a macro “all productions are down” story…and fumbled too strong of phrasing

@stevesi Working at Kinko’s in the late 80’s was like being at the center of the universe for your local college town. Everything, literally everything, happening came through Kinko’s back then.

I spent Friday nights 8-12AM working in the computer center in January 1984. Two kinds of people came in to see the one public Mac on campus at the time (at launch of Mac). 1. mainframe grad students who looked at the mouse and declared "this is the most inefficient way to use a computer ever" and went back to VM/CMS and punch cards. 2. clueless frat and sorority classmates who came in and without asking any questions handed me their ID so they could use MacPaint to make a "ransom note" flyer for rush parties and keggers and make 200 copies at Kinkos.

in 2027 OAI will acquire Disney i'm calling it
John Coogan@johncoogan

TBPN has been acquired by OpenAI! The show is staying the same and we’ll continue to go live at 11am pacific every weekday. This is a full circle moment for me as I’ve worked with @sama for well over a decade. He funded my first company in 2013. Then helped us fix a serious logjam during a critical funding round a few years later. When I took my second company through YC, he was president at the time, and then when I joined Founders Fund, the first deal I saw in motion was the post-ChatGPT round in late 2022. And as we started growing TBPN last year, he was the very first lab lead to join the show. Thank you to everyone that has been a part of TBPN until now. The last year has been the most fun and rewarding part of my career and we’re excited to have more resources than ever going forward.

@humantransit We should build both. We should build. Stop with the this over that. Our population has doubled in my lifetime. Our air/landing/train/highway capacity has not doubled. It should. Build people. Build.

A new runway at San Francisco airport is possible only if California learns how to build things. And in that optimistic scenario, it would be better to finish high-speed rail. A big share of SFO flights are to the Los Angeles area.
Aaron M. Renn 🇺🇸@aaron_renn

San Francisco needs to fix its airport runway situation for real. Naturally, the last time the city tried to do this, environmentalists were able to kill the plan. It’s hard to imagine a fix happening now, in a more dysfunctional age.

@RetroBayArea It's always been a boomtown - since 1776. The 90s was just when the bohemians had moved in. Then software ate the vibe and priced the artists out, and then covid brought three decades of suicidal empathy home to roost.

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

@lindaxie I think sumos are an example of a mandarin (or, in the US, a tangerine), not a type of orange.

@MCCCANM We should have built the extra runway back then. And we should build it now. Let’s do it!

In 2001, the SFO airport released a study concluding that new runways needed to be built in the bay to separate traffic & reduce the need for visual approaches. The new runways would be far enough apart that parallel approaches could be made even in bad weather. To offset any environmental effects, they would preserve vast stretches of wetlands. The proposal was supported by politicians & airline executives, among others. Environmentalists killed the plan. 25 years later, the FAA effectively kneecapped the airport by restricting parallel approaches. Will SFO now build the new runways? I doubt it. CA can’t actually build things. High-speed rail boondoggle, the 2014 bond that was supposed to build 10 new reservoirs (9 are now cancelled, the last has not begun construction & may never), wildlife bridge, a capital renovation where politicians refuse to reveal the costs & un-auditable homeless spending. Even if a proposal was made today & put before voters, would I support it as a resident? No. Not because SFO doesn’t need it – it does – but because the project would take the trajectory of every other California project & just become a black hole for money to mysteriously vanish into with nothing to show for it while politicians refuse to audit it. The state can’t afford it anyway. We have a looming fiscal crisis unfolding slowly, but it will accelerate soon. So, I’m sad. SFO is kneecapped, the region’s existing infrastructure can’t absorb the overflow & I don’t believe it can build. There is a future here, but its a future of decline. My airline career here isn’t over, but the trajectory has changed. I doubt I’ll be displaced from the left seat, but the days of growth are over.

@davepl1968 They had many broadcast / live TV viewings in schools because of Christa McAuliffe. Although I was home sick that particular morning and saw it on the TV in my grandma’s bedroom.

99.9% of people who "experienced" the Challenger disaster saw it on replay and now remember it as live. Almost NO ONE was watching. Everyone thinks they were. It's a fascinating collective false memory.
Jeremy London@SirJeremyLondon

Anyone who experienced the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, like I did, is probably a bit hesitant to get too excited about the Artemis II launch today. I truly hope our children don’t have to experience such tragedy. May the Universe welcome them and return them safely home 🙏
