You see theses posts a lot: here's some cheap rural land in Portugal, Spain or Italy, what a deal! Americans and Western/Northern Europeans start drooling immediately, imagine having a big piece of farm land with olives or grapes in Southern Europe? We could renovate it and build it into the place of our dreams, and cheap! Who doesn't want a farm these days But then you find out it's bullshit Because it's not like American rural land where you have pretty much full freedom to do whatever you want this, and usually there's even less freedom than in Western/Northern Europe in this case 9 out of 10 times you can't do anything with it because Southern European land is highly protected: it's usually a mix of buildable (in Portugal "urbano") and non-buildable (in Portuguese "rustico") land usually, the buildable part is the house, but even if you'd like to tear it down, you can ONLY rebuild it in the exact same design as how it looked before And the non-buildable land you can literally do nothing with but just look at Say goodbye to your dreams! It's mostly useless land and no you also can't turn it into a hotel or Airbnb unless you are a Southern European local and a member of the local municipality where you can green light any conversions of non-buildable to buildable land or give yourself an Airbnb or hotel license Which is by the way how many people in government here get rich, buy cheap non-buildable land for €50,000, convert it to buildable and sell it to a foreign hotel chain or developer for €1,000,000 or more (a 20x gain at least!) But you need connections or bribe people! Which foreigners can't and won't, because foreigners are new to a country, don't have 40+ years of connections to get stuff done and generally won't bribe So be honest: it's useless land

A family in Portugal is selling their 40-acre estate. It's inside a protected natural park. Farmhouse restored in the local style. A natural spring, a stream running through the land, two dams, and a well 75m deep. It also has olive trees, fruit trees, and a cork oak forest. In Portugal, cork oaks are protected by law. You can't cut them down. But every 9 years you can harvest the bark, and it grows back. The harvested cork goes into wine stoppers, flooring, insulation, handbags, shoes, even aerospace panels. This estate's trees currently hold about 24 tons of it. The estate covers three parcels. The house sits on the first and can be expanded by over 50%. The other two have potential for new builds. €782k ($920k), direct from the owner. Happy to do an intro for anyone seriously interested. Serra de São Mamede, 2km from the Spanish border. At night, there's no light pollution and according to the owners you can see the Milky Way. What would you do with a place like this?

@unclebobmartin But you know that LLMs are not deterministic, why are you still comparing it with compilers? you don’t review assembly code because you can be certain that the translation from your code is always the same, with LLMs don’t, to not talk if you different models on your project…

Assemblers were faster at writing binary than humans were. Compilers were faster at writing assembly than humans were. AIs are faster at writing compiled languages then humans are. Deal with it. There's still plenty left for you to do.

Friendly reminder, Hinton is the same guy who told us this: "We should stop training radiologists now. It's just completely obvious that within five years, deep learning is going to do better than radiologists.". That was six year ago. He was right about the AI. Wrong about the job. AI already reads scans better than any human. Six years after this nonsense prediction we have more radiologists. That's because Hinton and many others just fundamentally misunderstand that tasks are not jobs and that the job of a radiologist is also interacting with patients, being a light in darkness, providing hope and warmth and care and a thousand other things. Again we need to stop listening to these folks. I cannot say it enough, just because this fellow is brilliant with AI does not mean he has any clue how it will impact society. None. Zero.
Rohan Paul@rohanpaul_ai

Geoffrey Hinton on AI's job loss: History’s tech revolutions replaced one job with another. e.g. Tractors replaced farm jobs with factories & office jobs. But AI will break that cycle, because AI can replace both physical+intellectual labor.

SOMEONE PUT AN OPENCLAW-RUN VENDING MACHINE IN SAN FRANCISCO an AI agent is running an actual physical vending machine OpenClaw decides what to sell, how to name the products, how to price them, creates the ads, and tracks all the sales you can even see a dashboard of all the sales that the AI vending machine made the vending machine hardware does the dispensing. the AI does everything else, and of course inventory is supplied by the guy who runs it it's installed at Frontier Tower in SF which is a building packed with AI and robotics startup founders the agent forgot things, hallucinated, and at one point raised prices way too high. then tried to justify it because people were still buying we are now living in a simulation.

Prediction: AI companies will most likely need to launch a new AI architecture. Current LLMs have reached their limits and companies like Anthropic cannot launch their new versions due to compute issues. It’s mythos that they can’t launch. Ah and yes they will need to charge people $1,000 a month to break even.

just today we had an issue where someone was convinced they (their LLM) found the fix they keep going on and on about it and opening PRs then other people pile on complaining we're slow to fix things when the obvious solution is there but it's all made up, it literally doesn't fix anything the worst part is the problem is probably real and instead of working on it we're dealing with this nonsense

NEW: Musician Murphy Campbell says she isn’t making money on YouTube because an AI company is cloning her music and filing copyright claims against her own videos “An entity called Timeless Sounds IR uploaded AI-generated versions of my songs to all major streaming platforms... They used a distributor, which I just discovered, and that distributor’s name is Vydia. They used Vydia to upload all these AI-generated songs. Vydia has since decided to make copyright claims on all of the videos that were used to feed that AI engine to sound like me. So Vydia has come forward and made copyright claims on my YouTube page. Because YouTube does not personally review these things, I am no longer making money on YouTube. Vydia is making money on YouTube off of my own videos of me playing my own banjo in my own backyard with traditional folk songs, some for my own family, over AI-generated music.”

I got 2 exact same AI generated contributions and it is intimidating how much code they are generating. The one on the left is the AI generated PR code, the one on the right is the actual fix needed. The bug is SUPER easy while the agent is likely mislead by the context provided in the issue which is leading to 100x more code to fix it. My change was also AI generated, it's just the way you phrase your request. It's not a surprise Garry generates 100k LOC a week
