To be clear, yes there are a handful of battery trains around the world. But not many. This is not yet a proven tech for railway applications. It may one day be, but there is a risk this may fail: eg the Belair line is hilly compared to other test sites. This is a risky approach.

@ratcoffin1 Battery locos can work great at mines, where they can regen downhill to port, and use that free power to haul the empties back up. But you'd need many wagons of batteries to cross the Nullarbor, and OHW is out of the question

@ratcoffin1 It's not physically possible to power a large passenger plane on batteries. Synthetic fuels could be cheaper than replacing existing prime movers with electric with battery swaps. We have a lot of old trucks. (I work in EV charging)

@ratcoffin1 Synthetic fuels can power existing vehicles, and are needed for zero emission long distance trucks, trains, & passenger planes.
