#NBSLiveAt9 The IGG should deploy assisted declaration centers, mobile outreach, and offline-to-digital systems, while expanding digital access, training public servants, and integrating data verification to ensure inclusive, enforceable, and transparent compliance nationwide.

I appreciate the intellectual provocation by Yusuf Serunkuma. His call for Africans to interrogate global conflicts rather than simply consume narratives circulating in Western media is timely and important. His attempt to question the assumption that the confrontation between Iran and Israel is purely religious also opens useful space for deeper discussion. Religion often mobilises public sentiment, but it rarely explains the strategic drivers of state behaviour. That said, I think the argument becomes rather narrow when the conflict is reduced mainly to minerals and resource competition. The rivalry between Iran and Israel is much more layered. It is rooted in security competition, the construction of proxy networks across Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, nuclear deterrence calculations, and the contest for regional influence in the Middle East. Energy politics certainly play a role. Maritime corridors such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea shape global energy markets, while gas discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean influence regional alignments and economic diplomacy. Yet these dynamics operate alongside ideology, regime survival concerns, and alliance structures anchored partly by the United States. The historical references to colonial intervention are valid and important for understanding regional memory. However, they require clearer separation from current geopolitical realities. The present confrontation is unfolding within a changing global order in which actors such as China and Russia increasingly shape the strategic environment. Yusuf’s intervention is therefore stimulating and welcome. With a broader geopolitical and political economy framework that integrates regional alliances, energy corridors and the emerging multipolar order, the argument would become even more analytically persuasive for African audiences.

Ugandans, Africans: We have consumed a lot of western spin. But this is not a movie. Neither is it far from us. Not a religious war either. While both Iran & Israel have religious identities – & mobilize using religion – this is a war about minerals: gas, oil, land, marine resources, etc. In @observerug this week, I offer a beginners' guide: observer.ug/viewpoint/a-fo…

There is that video of a wobbly president of South Sudan – Salva Kirr Mayardit – making a public appearance. Clearly, it is not the South Sudanese keeping him in that office. It cannot be – and this is the sub-Saharan African condition.

Gen. Muhoozi and the political economy of African sovereignty Within this context, General @mkainerugaba's emphasis on self-financed defence capacity reflects strategic rationality rather than impulsive nationalism. Defending General Muhoozi and Uganda is not a rejection of co-operation, nor a denial of governance challenges. ✍️@SimonMulongo DETAILS 👉👉newvision.co.ug/category/peopl… #VisionUpdates

"Serunkuma’s essay ultimately yearns for political poetry: a graceful, redemptive ending. Yet statecraft in post-conflict societies is rarely lyrical. It is often tragic prose, where virtue lies not in symbolic gestures but in stewardship, sequencing, and restraint. The democratic horizon is not in dispute..." Amb. @simonmulongo, I didn't know your game. While I think you have chosen we bury our heads in the sand – this is very beautiful writing.

President @KagutaMuseveni's victory, widely reported as decisive, can be explained through a combination of structural, political, and behavioural factors that are often overlooked when analysts search for dramatic narratives rather than disciplined explanations. ✍️@simonmulongo DETAILS 👉👉newvision.co.ug/category/blogs…

The argument collapses because it confuses shared ancient religious practices with Islamic identity, an anachronism bordering on intellectual sleight of hand. Jesus did not “avoid pork” because he was Muslim; he was a first-century Jew living under Mosaic Law, Islam would not emerge for another six centuries. Fasting, prostration, ritual washing, modest dress, beards, circumcision, and greetings of peace were normative Near Eastern and Jewish practices, not Islamic trademarks retroactively projected backward. To call Jesus a Muslim because he prayed or fasted is like calling Abraham a Christian because he believed in one God. It is historically incoherent. Jesus did not preach the Qur’an, did not follow Muhammad, did not identify with Islam, and was crucified before Islam existed. This claim is not theology; it is chronological malpractice.

Political violence carried out in the name of Islam is best understood not as an expression of the faith itself, but as the result of its politicization by militant actors. Groups such as ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and Boko Haram selectively reinterpret religious texts to legitimize power, grievance, and coercion. Their actions mirror patterns seen in other ideologically driven conflicts worldwide, where belief systems, religious or secular, are distorted to mobilize violence. Conflating Islam with these movements obscures the diversity of Muslim societies and undermines serious analysis. The core issue is not religion per se, but the strategic exploitation of belief in contexts of state failure, conflict, and geopolitical contestation.

A little peace of history with remembering (for my Uganda folks) They used nom de guerre (fake names) to hide their identities while they committed heinous atrocities. For Eriya (Elia) Mwine, his chosen name was Chefe (Chef) Ali . He was RO/00017 (RO for Resistance Officer, the number of the NRA guerrilla fighters). In Gulu, at the current Bank of Uganda building location, he conducted pubic firing squads of civilian individuals they accused of being rebel collaborators. I was a young child then, a teenager, but these memories are ever green even in my adult life. When he left the 4th Division to become the Cheif of Staff of the UPDF, the entire region had been bombed into squalid IDP camps. The report Let My People Go, by Acholi Religious Leaders Peace Initiative, chronicled the then forgotten, now historicized, plight of civilians in these IDP camps. The UN called it then the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Thnx, @kasujja. So Munyagwa, in his confusion, pushes French over Kiswahili? Geography must have run away from him. Uganda trades daily with Kenya, Tanzania, DRC, South Sudan—all Kiswahili zones. Rwanda itself ditched French for English—news he clearly missed. Kiswahili is the real business lingua of East & Central Africa; French is a fading colonial echo, being dumped across Africa.
