Not surprising.
At one of the universities where I taught journalism, I had a class of around 30 students. I don’t know the exact entry requirements - but I remember thinking that only two of them had a realistic chance of a career in journalism. Their written English simply wasn’t strong enough.
Most of the cohort were international students.
At another university, I also taught many international students - but the standard of written English there was excellent. Which suggests this comes down to entry requirements - not where students are from.
I didn’t enjoy teaching at the first university nearly as much. I was constantly having to simplify my language and phrasing because I could see many students were struggling to follow.
But it sounds like at least they provide interpreters now 🙄

Ted and I had mutual friends at uni. He didn’t know at the time that I knew he was standing up for me in group chats where students were calling me far right for my gender critical views. @AdamPollock what? when i applied to UK unis the general admission rule was 7-7.5 IELTS, an average grade somewhere around top 1-5% and a lot of tuition money. This was necessary to only get considered as a candidate and didn't guarantee that you will be accepted.

International students get it so easy at British universities.
In the first week of my undergraduate degree at Durham University, we had to do an English language test to see who needed translation support.
Why did people who can’t speak English get into a top university? 💰

How is this fair? British kids have to get 3 As to get into University yet foreign students have to get 2 Cs and 1 D.... for the exact same course.

One thing that’s very noticeable in GB is that almost all security workers are now from the Subcontinent or Africa. They’ve been totally replaced: railway stations and airports, festivals, supermarkets, etc. Not a single white British person.

Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination. The adhan - which declares there is no god but allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination. Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions. And given their explicit repudiation of Christianity they certainly do not belong in our churches and cathedrals. I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook. Trafalgar Square belongs to all of us. It is a national memorial to our independence and our salvation. Last night was not like a televised football match or a St Patrick’s Day celebration. It was an act of domination and therefore division. It shouldn’t happen again.
