The only thing left for us is to pray. Pray for the safety of our families, for our countries, for our planet. May God forgive us and protect us.

@OrdnancePackard Kids these days should have their own thing. This cultural stagnation is just weird and sad. new writing cannot and will not stand on its own without a legacy brand skin suit

I’m Japanese and studying English. I’m learning about the differences between American English and British English. Is this accurate?🇺🇸🇬🇧😵‍💫

@TheTrekCentral Notice how it's 90% paid bluechecks celebrating this news. You know they cancelled Kirk and the boys after 2 seasons in the '60's as well. It may take a couple decades but this show and these kids will be vindicated. Cancelling a Trek show after only 20 episodes is outrageous.

@LukasHozda I'm hoping that means there will be a boom in used mac minis for the few of us who do run local workloads

@blahmoah @stevesi I was thinking more so data transfer. But yeah installing NT (any version) and office from floppy was a nightmare. I used to use Linux and tar from a server so I didn't have to do it manually... Should have gotten more involved as it was basically ghost before it existed in 94.

@virtuallyfun @stevesi That's definitely fun -- think how people need to make sure the product doesn't take too many floppies to install. I think back then I installed Windows 95 (Taiwan version) from like 20 or 30 1.44MB floppies. Fun experience!

The AI Slopacalypse will make efforts of hardening against buffer overruns and DDOS (etc) look easy. This isn't just a SN issue, but an issue for anywhere humans are confronted with words, voices, images…especially a workplace. If your tools create then you need this work.
Nikita Bier@nikitabier

The fortress we are building—and the layers of redundancy—to protect the platform against the AI Slopacalypse will seem obvious in a few months. Whether we use every tool in our toolkit is TBD, but it would be negligent to not have them ready.

The UK version of SNL is about as funny as having a root canal without anaesthetic. Anyone watching it?

@CouchPotatoUK @AvonandsomerRob I don't have any TV. I'm one of those people that cut the cord decades ago. If it's interesting they'll make a DVD that nobody will buy, and it'll end up at CeX for £1

I miss the start menu being a start menu. Or that its javascript and just hitting the windows key a dozen times absolutely throttles a machine. I get the new kids don't like C/C++ but wow... Can we get a C/C++ Windows, and a jr mint version with all the fluff? GDI is all we need

The team and I have spent the past several months analyzing feedback from the community. What came through was the voice of people who care deeply about Windows and want it to be better. Read this blog post to learn more about what we're doing in response as we look to raise the bar on Windows 11 quality. Please keep the feedback coming, to help us shape the future of Windows together. blogs.windows.com/windows-inside…

@davepl1968 Even reading about him in the 'inside nt' book, I kind of gave up trying to be a serious programmer, as I knew I'd at best be someone to use the wrong tabs, and break something in the build process, and get burned alive for it. So I stick to amateur hour stuff...

I just had a morbid thought that would make for a morbid interview question that would never have occurred to me when we had less than 10k people: At a company like Microsoft with a quarter of a million employees, how many people die on average each day? According to AI, and based on actuarial data for the tech industry (which trends younger and healthier than, let's say, the Wisconsin Dairy industry), the answer is 1-2 per day: Using Social Security’s 2022 period life table, the annual probability of death around age 40 is about 0.335% for males and 0.180% for females. At ages 38–42, the numbers are all in that same neighborhood. So for a 250,000-person company: If you use a blended annual mortality of around 0.20% to 0.30%, that implies about 500 to 750 deaths per year. It's probably worse because Microsoft likely skews heavily male in the ranks. Divide by 365 and you get about 1.4 to 2.1 deaths per day. I don't mean to make light of the topic, and confess that I would be personally devastated by my own passing. It's just a mental exercise...
