OK, i am *NOT* saying this in order to imply that invasion would be good (it wouldn't!), but these historically and cartographically illiterate takes from people who've self-reinvented overnight as "topo map interpreters" still irritate me. Historically, Iran was conquered by the Macedonians, Arabs, Mongols and Turks. There was also the 1941 Anglo-Soviet invasion. The Zagros Moutnains are formidable but they are not the Hindu Kush, and you can find other topo maps which visually dramatize them less.

We simply do not have the number of troops in our entire ground forces that could be mustered to make such an attack, and even if we foolishly did order them in, they would be defeated in the many mountainous ridges and valleys that give decisive advantage to the defending force. In short, yes, reject any idea of a ground invasion of Iran. It would be suicidal, and on par with Hitler's fatal decision to invade the USSR in September 1941. It would result in the destruction of the American empire.

Afghanistan is just as mountainous and the Taliban were bombed until their C&C broke and then invaded successfully.
The same could be done with Iran, and no, America wouldn’t be defeated in the mountain passes. It’s not Thermopylae.
However you are correct that it would be an incredibly idiotic move to launch a ground invasion. Not because you’d lose, but because you’d win relatively quickly but then find yourself in a quagmire worse than Vietnam. That’s the real reason not to launch a ground invasion.
