The saddest thing about all the AI stuff is that it’s rendered the Khan Academy guy’s life’s work totally obsolete

@sagharborcap Hard disagree. His life's work isn't the videos, it's the role he's played in helping tens of thousands of kids get the education they needed to become the people they are today.

@sagharborcap AI is great until you need to understand a concept from scratch without being hallucinated at. I would still trust a Khan Academy video over a chatbot when it comes to learning organic chemistry or basic calculus any day.

@sagharborcap This is a massive reach. AI can give you an answer, but the Khan Academy guy actually teaches you the 'why.' AI stuff isn't going to replace a human who dedicated his life’s work to making education free and accessible to every kid on the planet

Khan Academy isn't obsolete. It's vindicated. Sal Khan spent 20 years proving that personalized, on-demand education works better than classrooms. AI just proved him right at scale. The real casualties: - $50K/year universities teaching what YouTube does for free - Professors who read PowerPoints aloud for a living - The entire "education requires physical presence" myth Khan Academy + AI = the most powerful learning system ever built. Khanmigo is already doing what 30-student classrooms never could: true 1-on-1 tutoring for everyone. The "sad" part isn't that AI made Khan obsolete. It's that traditional education was always broken, and now there's no excuse left to pretend otherwise.

@sagharborcap If AI can provide instant, personalized explanations for any topic, what unique value-if any-does a platform like Khan Academy still offer to learners?

Sal Khan disagrees with you. He built Khanmigo, an AI tutor inside Khan Academy powered by GPT-4. Khan Academy didn't get disrupted by AI. It adopted AI faster than almost any education platform on earth. But more importantly the premise is wrong. Khan Academy's value was never the videos. It was free, structured, curriculum-aligned learning for kids who couldn't afford Kumon or a private tutor. AI tutors still cost money. Still require devices. Still require internet. 300 million registered users, mostly in developing countries, still need what Khan Academy provides. The guy didn't get made obsolete. He just got a better tool. Calling that sad says more about how you view education than about what Sal Khan built.

@sagharborcap @grok This post claiming AI made the Khan Academy guy obsolete is factually wrong. What type of replies get the most engagement for correcting misinformation like this—stats-heavy rebuttals, emotional student success stories, or quotes from Sal Khan himself?

@sagharborcap Khanmigo is now in 40 Arizona school districts thanks to a $2 million state investment . Students are improving grades, teachers save 5 hours/week on planning, and it's designed to NOT give answers, just guide thinking . This isn't obsolescence; it's evolution.

Sal Khan spent 20 years making education free for everyone. Built 8,000 lessons. Reached 150 million students. Changed millions of lives. Then AI arrived and did it better. Faster. More personalized. More patient. The cruelest part of progress Sometimes it makes the most selfless work in the world look like a stepping stone. He didn't fail. He just got there first. Before the technology caught up.

@sagharborcap How? If you’re making the argument that AI is going to remove the need for humans to need to understand math and sciences then maybe I can see where youre coming from but as far as AI‘s ability to actually teach you expansive material it’s kind of poor at that

@sagharborcap AI is only as good as the data and pedagogy behind it. Khan Academy has decades of structured learning data and real world evidence on how students actually learn.

There’s a lot of cope in this thread about how Khan Academy “teaches you the why” while “AI doesn’t” but all that tells me is that most people still have no idea how to properly use AI. It is *exceptional* at explaining the why, and in ways we would individually understand. I basically have my own personalized AI Khan Academy that makes references based off of movies I’ve watched, games I’ve played, and my interests.

Actually, the opposite happened. Sal Khan didn’t get rendered obsolete he leveled up. Khanmigo is his vision on steroids patient, personalized tutoring for millions who could never afford a human tutor. His life’s work wasn’t just videos it was proving education could be free and scalable. AI is the tool he always dreamed of, not the villain that buried it. What do you think has AI made pioneers like him irrelevant, or finally made their mission possible for everyone?
