@RejoinP "A rich servant"? The UK punched well above its weight as a member of the EU, and 90% of the the time, the EU votes went our way.

@Paul_Millard68 @KirstieMAllsopp I'm a member of our local ShopWatch which includes retailers and the police. There are only a couple of full time coppers and a few special constables covering a wide area. We all know who the thieves are. Mostly nicking and selling to unscrupulous corner shops to fund a habit.

@JimQbert @KirstieMAllsopp Yes same in my area, the police are useless and would rather arrest the victim and give the criminal a cup of tea and a pat on the back, the law is bent and the government is crooked and far too woke.

Here’s the thing, I understand why Waitrose felt they had to fire Walker Smith. This whole sorry tale illustrates perfectly what a state we’re in as a nation. Dominated by fear of litigation & higher insurance premiums, we have lost any sense of personal responsibility.

@Paul_Millard68 @KirstieMAllsopp In my area, shoplifting is already rife because there are so few police around & even when the thieves get arrested, they rarely get a custodial sentence. They already know they can get away with it. I'm not defending supermarkets, just saying that there's a bigger problem.

@JimQbert @KirstieMAllsopp Thieves will be loving this because they will know for sure they will get away with it in any supermarket, the prices will be going up even more because of cowards who run Waitrose.

I know it sounds gimmicky, but this was legit amazing. Like a Big Mac and a taco had a baby, and it was the best of both worlds.

Shoplifting is a huge problem, I agree. In my area, retailers are getting hammered but the area is policed by just a couple of full time officers and a few special constables. They know who the thieves are, but they rarely get custodial sentences especially with overcrowded jails. Most of the thieves steal items to sell on to unscrupulous corner shops or door-to-door, often to fund drug habits. However, and maybe I'm showing my age, but I was raised with the principle that two wrongs don't make a right. We absolutely need to solve the problem, but do so the correct way. Granted, that's not easy, given the current state of public finances.

@omgnowthis @JimQbert @KirstieMAllsopp Punched him? If you break a law can someone punch you in your face? Maybe knock out a couple of teeth? Twitter has turned people with normal profiles into I don't know what.

@RabbittLeader @KirstieMAllsopp Incorrect. The cap on unfair dismissal awards was one year’s salary or £123k, whichever is lower. However, that cap is due to be removed from January 2027. There’s also no evidence of racial bias in ET outcomes.

Just to clarify, as I mute fools: we all have a choice to boycott a shop we think behaves badly. And to say so, and ask for clarification. Esp if we were once proud that “The John Lewis Partnership is founded on the principle of industrial democracy where employees are Partners”

@JRLevinsLaw If the dismissal is based only on what's been reported, that does seem an odd decision. I can't help but wonder if there's more to this that we're unaware of?

@Jacob_Rees_Mogg There are a number of things that must happen in order for a dismissal decision to be lawful (see Burchell Test). You may not have all the facts. Mr Smith can file an ET claim if he genuinely feels he's been unfairly dismissed. I'm sure he'd appreciate your financial support.

Never knowingly underpriced Waitrose is amazingly mean to fire someone for going above and beyond the call of duty on smug health and safety grounds. mol.im/a/15709425
